Review - Devil's Reach Series by J.L. Drake

I thought the light would bring redemption.
Salvation.
But it only brought the Devil to my doorstep.
My demons are breaking through, and the reaper is moving closer.
My weakness has been exposed, and there’s only one person who can calm this hell…

REVIEW:

There is always a risk when you ask to read a book for review. Personally, I fear for the uncomfortable situation when I have to say to the author or organizer “sorry, it was not on my taste”… because let’s be fair, it is all about taste here. Fortunately, with Unleashed, it was not the case… Even more, Devils Reach offered that kind of the story that made me forcefully stretch out my free time limits and, let me tell you, this is counted for something.

Devil’s Reach story has that “thing” which does not allow you to put the book (or tablet) down. I named the series because the #3 story – Unleashed - is not a stand-alone, but a continuation. I did not read the blurbs of the first two books, but, during the first volume, Mrs. Drake played a fair game and, using the story, gave us a clue regarding the cliffhanger(s) in which the first two volumes will end… (Happy me, I received all three volumes of the trilogy –thanks, by the way! Happy you, future readers, all three volumes are now available).

The characters: main and secondary are interesting and for sure entertaining. Changes are there, subtle but visible for an alert reader. All play their role and are present as long as necessary. You’ll like, love or regret one or another.

The story – it’s a good ride if you are looking for twisties. When bad people come out to play… the story veer to a road of tar snakes, sweepers, and hairpins. Once on the road… it’s WFO. Rules and broken rules, brotherhood and betrayals, love, commitment and pure violence, their story is not for rubies. But the reward is worth the torment. From one volume to another, the accents are changed and so the story as a whole evolves. There is no too much place for empty “political correctness”, but make no mistake – what is important is there, even if under different colors. The respect exists if it’s earned.

At some point (or two) I questioned author’s solutions. They were possible, but quite improbable having in view the situations. Getting closer to the end, the explanations came and the improbable changed into probable. Well done, Mrs. Drake: the details are there, nothing falls from the clear sky.

If you’ll like Devil’s Reach (the title hides different meanings!) depends on the person you are, on how open mind you are and what you are able to accept or understand, but Devils' Reach has what an MC needs and must have. The MC stories readers form a small enough family, but we are always in the mood to accept prospects. You should try it if you have the guts… Mrs. Drake already gained her place at our table.

Enjoy the ride! ATGATT!
Too strong to run,
too proud to hide
For this, I'll pay...
for this I'll die.
Trigger (#1)

I was raised by the Devil himself.
Formed into a man who was unreachable.
I went from the boy with bruises to the man with a trigger.
Killing is the only thing that calms the itch.
The demons inside were a constant battle…
…until she changed everything.

Problem is when you spend most of your time in the dark, is it smart to step into the light?

Demons (2)

Trigger…
I thought the light would bring redemption.
Salvation.
But it only brought the Devil to my doorstep.
My demons are breaking through, and the reaper is moving closer.
My weakness has been exposed, and there’s only one person who can calm this hell…

Tess…
I broke a promise to myself, and now I’m paying for it.
I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be a part of this hell.
But I don’t have a choice…
The reaper is riding bitch on our backs.

Unleashed (#3)

Published: October 30th, 2018

Trigger
Tess was under the Devil’s watch while I suffered behind bars with my demons…
The ace in my pocket brings power, and the temptation to flip overwhelms me.
I’m playing chicken with the reaper, and it’s only feeding his thirst.
The smell of blood is a drug. It fuels me. Consumes me.
I am lost.

Tess
The Devil stole me, but I refuse to belong to someone else.
I’m a fighter.
I will do whatever it takes to get back to my family.
Treachery and betrayal surround us.
The only way out is to turn the greatest loss into the greatest victory.
