5. Even though I don’t believe in anything he stands for, Alderon is still a very interesting character to me. He really exemplifies pure evil and is even missing emotions that his dark counterparts are seemingly born with. It is astonishing to me that he doesn’t have any sort of emotion outside of anger and hatred when it comes to his children. The bond, and love that a parent has for a child is unbreakable, and yet it means absolutely nothing to him. I definitely don’t understand or respect it, but he’s an important character and the book wouldn’t be the same without him. So maybe not a “favorite,” but very thought-provoking.

Someone slammed into my shoulder, making me stumble into my brother. I whipped around, my hair flying around my head as I lost control of my power. Logan stood there, a wicked grin tilting up one corner of his mouth. I considered letting a little of my explosive power loose, but I’d be on a slippery slope if I did. I knew from past experience that I must be starting to glow by now, but the other students seemed to be filing past without noticing. With more willpower than I thought I possessed, I reined myself in. Once the fires were quenched, I realized what a bad idea it would have been to let them out. I glanced around, but the only people who seemed to have noticed were Violet and Antonio.

“What exactly is going on?” Violet asked. She narrowed her eyes as she studied me. “I…felt something. And I think you glowed.”

I wanted to tell her nothing had happened aside from a confrontation with a jerk, but Logan wasn’t done being a grade-A bully.

Logan got really close, almost in my face. “Fae.” He spat the word like it was distasteful. “And a good girl I’d bet.” He packed so much malice into the words, I felt offended, despite the fact that I really was a good girl.

My brother’s strong fingers wrapped around my upper arm, pulling me back. As I took one reluctant step away from the boy who’d been trying so desperately to rile me up, my hand raised, my fingers clenched tightly in a fist I was moments from throwing. And if I lost control of myself, even for a moment, I could turn the school into a fiery inferno. I took a deep breath to calm myself as I glanced around at the students who had no idea how close they had been to disaster.

Something odd was going on here. Why weren’t the humans noticing us using magic in the middle of the hall? They should be freaking out, stampeding out the doors and reporting the freaks to the government by now. Instead they just hurried about their lives, chattering about inconsequential things as if they were life and death. I suppose to them, it was. But it was hard to imagine a formal dance as the most important event of the year when you’re standing toe to toe with a boy who wanted to hurt you simply because you were there.

“You reek of good.” Logan was cloaked in darkness as he spoke, shadows rolling around him like smoke. Horns curved forward out of the dark hair on top of his head, the tips curving up to his hairline. I glanced around again but the students continued to flow around us as if they didn’t see anything. Maybe they couldn’t.

My brother coughed and I could feel a surge of energy in him, a strange sixth sense we shared. I grabbed his wrist before he did something as stupid, as I tried not to do the same. I glanced around again, still expecting everyone to be standing and staring at us. Aside from a few scattered stragglers, we were alone in the hall. A boy with dark curls rounded the corner, rushing to Logan’s side. He grabbed his arm and gave him a shake.

“Dude, back off.”

Logan snarled at him, and the shorter boy’s eyes glowed red, moving as if the irises were made of liquid. With his jaw set, Logan stepped backwards away from me.

“Is this entire school made up of fae?” I asked, spinning to face forward with my hands thrown up in the air. Too late I remembered Violet walking along beside us, oblivious to the fae world.

She took the weirdness in stride. “Not entirely, but we seem to have more than our fair share. I think all the teachers are, and a good chunk of the staff too.”

Or maybe not so oblivious. I didn’t realize I had stopped until she turned to face me.

Review - Iced by Karen Marie Moning

Iced is the first volume of the Dani O'Malley’s trilogy and sometimes presented as book 6 of the FEVER series.

Some of you already know that I consider FEVER series one of the most successful "modern" urban fantasy series. It has action, tension, struggle for survival, testing and personal development, friendships and bitter enmities, unexpected alliances and betrayals or false ones and especially it has a relationship that is about to explode under the romantic tension. Everything is seasoned with varied and well chosen humor.

Although is born as a spin off, ICED gains to assert its independence, demonstrating its own value. I can say that Iced is the first “collateral“ series in which I don’t yearn after previous characters. As much as I liked and still like (actually I’ll reread Fever in Christmas holiday) Mac and Barrons (Barrons wow!!) I don’t miss them. The author’s well chosen small references, their rapid appearances, are not make me wait and wonder when they will make their presence felt.

Dani, the friend (or enemy to death?) of Mac is like quicksilver. Clever, gifted with skills inherited from hers ancestors who have tasted the pleasure from the good fairy (Seelie) is a girl who fights for those who need her help or not. As dedicated she is to the fight against the bad fairy aka Unseelie, with hers youthful carelessness and confidence in her powers " Best of the best. Dani Mega O'Malley. That's What They Call Me. The Mega." she has the talent to get from trouble to trouble, and managed to escape at the last minute. And for all that she is and she does, Dani attracts attention. Oooo, yes! Many are starting to stick around and many are beginning to pave the way for when she’ll grown up enough to be claim.

One of the "pretender" (do not be fooled by the word, a better one will be claimer) is Ryodan. If KMM was able to make Barrons one “of the best”, Ryodan is another kind, but no less than “the best”. With unknown intentions, with secret plans, he is ready for anything and willing to face anything to hire Dani. I do not want to tell you more about it, but that you'll put your feelings to the test. Another interesting and interested in Dani is Christian, the Highlander who is about to replace the Prince that was killed by our heroine (by whom else?). Caught in the struggle between what he was, what he is to become and can’t change and what he wants to be, Christian is a serious competitor. Personally I'm really sorry that I don’t want him be the one who will win Dani. Strange, isn’t? The third character is only human (at least for now) with intelligence far above average and who managed to survive the collapse of the walls between the human world and the fairy all by himself.

Now, you must not think that we are dealing with a love quartet, not in the least! That is because our dear Dani, as brave, resourceful and intelligent she is as naive is in regard of the human “relations”. This naivety and the rivalry between the three of them, is an inexhaustible source of great humor. But I hope that over the next volumes, Dani will grown up and her naivety will be replaced with certain feelings for a certain person. Feelings that initially she’ll not want to admit, but the feelings will be there and will fuel the relationships, minds and hearts of the "targets". In fact, these feelings are already germinating under the blanket of hers innocence.

In addition to the main action, ICED presents and prepares, including by alternating the narrator, the action for the future volumes. Dangers lurk in the frozen shadows, traps are laid, challenges are designed. Different characters have to face their own demons and their personal trials to gain.

So, if you can read it, read it! It has everything it takes to stand proud alongside FEVER series and sometime is more humorous.

Iced este primul volum al trilogiei eroinei Dani O’Malley şi prezentat uneori ca volumul 6 al seriei FEVER.

Câțiva dintre voi ştiți deja că eu consider seria FEVER una dintre cele mai reuşite serii „moderne” urban fantasy. Are acțiune, tensiune, lupte pentru supraviețuire, încercări şi evoluții personale, prietenii şi duşmănii aprige, trădări şi alianțe neaşteptate sau false şi mai ales are o relație care stă să explodeze sub tensiunea romantică. Totul este condimentat cu un umor variat şi bine ales.

Deşi născut ca un spin off, ICED reuşeşte să-şi impună independența, demonstrându-şi propria valoare. Pot spune liniştită că este prima serie „colaterală” în care nu tânjesc după personajele anterioare. Oricât de mult mi-au plăcut şi îmi plac încă (de fapt de Crăciun vreau să recitesc Fever) Mac şi Barrons (wow! Barrons!) nu le simt lipsa. Micile trimiteri, fugarele apariții, foarte bine alese de autoare, nu mă fac să aştept şi să mă întreb când îşi vor face simțită prezența?

Dani, prietena (sau duşmanul de moarte?) lui Mac este ca argintul viu. Isteață, înzestrată cu abilități moştenite de la ascendenții ei care au gustat din plăcerea zânelor (Fae) bune (Seelie) este o fată care luptă pentru cei care au nevoie de ajutorul ei sau nu. Dedicată luptei împotriva Unseelie aka zânele rele, cu nepăsarea tinereții şi încredere în puterile ei „Best of the best. Dani Mega O’Malley. That’s what they call me. The Mega.”are talentul de a intra din belea în belea, reuşind să scape doar în ultimul moment. Şi pentru tot ceea ce este şi face, Dani atrage atenția. Oooo, da! Mulți încep să-i dea târcoale şi mulți încep să-şi pregătească terenul pentru atunci când ea va creşte suficient pentru a o revendica.

Unul dintre „pretendenți” (nu vă lăsați înşelați de acest cuvânt) este Ryodan. Dacă KMM a reuşit să-l facă pe Barrons „the best of the best”, Ryodan este un alt gen, dar nu mai puțin decât „the best of the best”. Cu intenții necunoscute, cu planuri secrete este pregătit pentru orice şi dispus să înfrunte orice pentru a o angaja pe Dani. Nu vreau să vă spun despre el decât că veți avea inimile în primejdie. Un alt individ interesant şi interesat de Dani este Christian scoțianul de munte (highlander) care este pe cale de lua locul prințului ucis de eroina noastră (de cine altcineva??). Prins în lupta dintre ceea ce a fost, ceea ce devine şi nu poate schimba şi între ceea ce vrea să fie, Christian este un concurent serios. Personal îmi pare sincer rău că nu vreau s-o câştige pe Dani. Ciudat, nu? Al treilea personaj masculin e doar uman (cel puțin deocamdată) cu o inteligență cu mult peste medie şi care a reuşit singur să supraviețuiască prăbuşirii zidurilor dintre lumea umană şi cea a zânelor.

Acum să nu credeți că avem de a face cu un cvartet amoros, nici pe de parte! Asta din cauză că draga noastră Dani, pe cât de vitează, descurcăreață şi inteligentă este, pe atât de naivă este în ceea ce priveşte relațiile „interumane”. Această naivitate, alături de rivalitatea dintre cei trei, este o sursă inepuizabilă de umor bine strecurat de KMM. Sper însă ca pe parcursul următoarelor volume, Dani să crească şi în final naivitatea ei să fie înlocuită cu sentimente pentru o anumită persoană. Sentimente pe care inițial nu va vrea să le recunoască, dar care vor fi acolo şi vor înfierbânta relațiile, mințile şi inimile celor „vizați”. De fapt aceste sentimente deja germinează sub pătura inocenței ei.

Pe lângă încercările din prim plan, ICED prezintă şi pregăteşte, inclusiv prin alternarea povestitorului, acțiunea viitoarelor volume. Pericole pândesc din umbre înghețate, capcane sunt aşternute pe nesimțite, provocări sunt proiectate. Personaje diferite au de înfruntat proprii demoni şi au propriile încercări de câştigat, încercări ale căror premise încep să fie acum conturate.

Pe scurt, dacă puteți să o citiți, citiți-o! Are tot ceea ce îi trebuie să stea mândră alături de FEVER şi în plus, ceva mai mult umor.

Review and Giveaway (INTERNATIONAL) The Shadow Reader by Sandy Williams

Because the long awaited Book 2 of the series was just published, I thought it’s time to tell you something about the first one: The Shadow Reader.

In short, The Shadow Reader is a book of 5 stars (maximum on most sites and blogs for books). It’s that kind of book you can not put down. It has rhythm, thrill, relationships and romance. Here comes the problem! We have a trio, but a special one. Many have criticized the 'old' relationship as unrealistic, blaming the heroine to be (at least) naive and / or a little masochistic. I disagree and I know people who have been through similar situations. The only explanation that I find is those who argue that, certainly they not ever truly loved. Can be convinced that they did, but they are wrong. In addition, as you'll see, the relationship with Kyol carries many nuances and each of them, consciously or not, leave their mark on our McKenzie.

 "I'll talk to Atroth, McKenzie. If you'll forgive me, if you still want me, I'll talk to him. I'll convince you and I Should Be Him together. "Really? I want to ask, but i can not form the question. This is what I've always wanted, I've been clinging to the hope for a decade, and now, I'm terrified I Might Be trapped in a dream. 

Usually I choose my favorite at the first pages and I do not really care what happens with the one who will lose. So it was with Adrian for example, I was totally pro Dimitri (from Vampire Academy), and although I understand Adrian, I didn’t wanted to be the one that Rose will choose and didn’t bother me too much that he was ... inconsolable. (Sorry Team Adrian, but see? All for the best, now he has his own series ... well Sydney has, but with him).

With the two rivals from The Shadow Reader it was not the case. Yes, I want that McKenzie to be with Aren, but I do think that it wouldn’t bother me too much if she’ll to stay with Kyol. As I read I became more convinced that the mainly reason for the bad relationship between he and McKenzie was not some kind of male cowardice or lapse. On the contrary!

The author has developed very well the relationship between the three of them. McKenzie’s decisions were some very good in that crisis she was in, situations of those nature where you do not really have anything to rely on - any pro has a versus - where there are no rules that can be applied, there is no precedent. I have nothing to reproach to her. I support her in everything she decides, no matter who she’ll choose.

Is not this so freaking fantastic? I've spent ten years searching for someone to fill the spot in my heart Meant for Kyol, and when i finally find a contender, he's an enemy and he's fae.

Both Aren and Kyol have their own strengths and weaknesses, and one of them had more time to make mistakes - if you’ll find that there are mistakes. It’s sure that the problem is not easy to solve.

Some would like to pity Kyol and they can’t. I feel sorry for all of them. It's a book where you want to find a solution that would make everyone happy and, for the moment, it’s not possible. It seems that the things will be more complicated in Book 2 and reader's feelings will be changing a lot many times. But nothing is certain...

It's supposed to be the last kiss, and if we were both human or both fae, It Might have Been, But the moment Before we separated, chaos lusters explode through me. The jerk of HIS body, HIS sudden inhalation, tells me he feels Them, too, and INSTEAD of moving apart, we move closer. So much closer.

The Shadow Reader has also the quality that is not lost in a certain romance. The love story is combined with moments of pure action. War, with its battles, horrors, losses and victories is always present. When you think it's quiet, you get a scene that immediately awakens you from your romantic dreams. Characters who have become dear to you will suffer. However, the book doesn’t become a action one. Sandy Williams found a very well balance between romance and action.

There is so much to say ... Secondary characters are treated with the same care as the main ones and you’ll get to love them or hate them. The story of McKenzie, Kyol and Aren is not only romance or the only romance where there is suffering. You get unexpected twists of situations, power struggles, decisions about which everyone has his own opinion, even a pinch of humor.

My eyes shoot open when Kyol grabs my arm. Aren holds on a moment more, his lips and hands lingering as if this is his last breath. As if this is the only breath in his life that has ever mattered. Then he locks eyes with the sword-master.

“McKenzie.” He kisses my lips again briefly, then again, lingering. “I’ll be waiting at the crossroads. I promise.”

Pentru că abia a fost publicat mult aşteptatul volum 2 al seriei, mi-am zis să vă spun câte ceva despre primul: The Shadow Reader.

Pe scurt, The Shadow Reader e o carte de 5 stele (maximum pe majoritatea site-urilor şi blogurilor destinate cărților). Face parte din genul acela de cărți pe care nu o poți pune jos.

Are ritm, are tensiune, are relații şi romantism. Aici intervine problema! Avem un trio, dar unul special. Mulți au criticat relația “veche” ca fiind nerealistă, învinuind eroina de (cel puțin) naivitate şi/sau ceva masochism. Nu sunt de acord şi ştiu persoane care au trecut prin situații similare. Singura explicație pe care o găsesc este aceea că cei ce susțin asta, cu siguranță nu au iubit niciodată cu adevărat. Pot fi convinşi că au făcut-o, dar se înşeală. În plus, aşa cum o să vedeți (credeați că de data asta o să vă spun?), relația cu Kyol poartă mult mai multe nuanțe şi fiecare în parte, conştient sau nu, îşi lasă amprenta pe a noastră McKenzie.

 “I’ll talk to Atroth, McKenzie. If you’ll forgive me, if you still want me, I’ll talk to him. I’ll convince him you and I should be together.” Really? I want to ask, but I can’t form the question. This is what I’ve always wanted, the hope I’ve been clinging to for a decade, and now, I’m terrified I might be trapped in a dream. 

De regulă îmi aleg din prima preferatul (însă se pare că ce am citit în ultimul timp vrea să-mi strice acest bun obicei) şi abia îmi pasă ce se întâmplă cu cel care - bineînțeles - va pierde. Aşa a fost şi cu Adrian de exemplu; am fost total pro Dimitri, şi deşi l-am înțeles pe Adrian, nu am vrut să fie alesul lui Rose şi nu m-a deranjat prea tare că a rămas... neconsolat. (Scuze echipă Adrian dar vedeți? Tot răul spre bine, acum are propria lui serie... mă rog Sydney, dar e cu el)

Cu cei doi rivali din The Shadow Reader nu a fost aşa. Da, aş vrea să rămână cu Aren dar nu cred că m-ar deranja să rămână şi cu Kyol. Pe măsură ce citeam m-am convins că nu din laşitate sau alte delăsări masculine nu a făcut nimic pentru relația sa cu McKenzie. Dimpotrivă!

Autoarea a dezvoltat foarte bine relația dintre cei trei. Deciziile pe care i le-a dat lui McKenzie au fost unele foarte bune în situațiile de criză în care aceasta se afla, situații de natura acelora în care în care nu prea ai nimic obiectiv pe care să te bazezi – orice pro are un contra - , în care nu există reguli ce pot fi aplicate, nu există precedente. Nu am nimic să-i reproşez. O susțin în tot ce decide, indiferent pe cine va alege (din nou, credeați că vă spun pe cine??).

 Isn’t this so freaking fantastic? I’ve spent ten years searching for someone to fill the spot in my heart meant for Kyol, and when I finally find a contender, he’s an enemy and he’s fae.

Atât Aren cât şi Kyol au calitățile şi defectele lor, iar unul a avut mai mult timp la dispoziție să greşească – dacă le veți considera greşeli. Sigur nu e o problemă uşor de rezolvat.

Unora ar vrea să le fie milă de Kyol şi nu prea pot. Mie mi-e milă de toți. E o carte în care vrei să se găsească o soluție care să-i facă pe toți fericiți şi, deocamdată, nu se poate. Se pare însă că apele vor deveni mult mai învolburate în volumul 2 şi părerile cititorului se vor putea schimba. Dar nimic nu e sigur...

 It’s supposed to be a last kiss, and if we were both human or both fae, it might have been, but the moment before we separate, chaos lusters explode through me. The jerk of his body, his sudden inhalation, tells me he feels them, too, and instead of moving apart, we move closer. So much closer.

The Shadow Reader are şi calitatea că nu se pierde într-un romance oarecare. Povestea de dragoste este fericit îmbinată cu momente de pură acțiune. Războiul, cu luptele, ororile, pierderile şi victoriile lui e prezent mereu. Când crezi că e linişte ai parte de o scenă ce te trezeşte imediat din visurile romantice. Personaje care ți-au devenit dragi au de suferit. Totuşi nu devine o carte de acțiune. Sandy Williams a echilibrat bine balanța.

Sunt atât de multe de spus... Personajele secundare sunt tratate cu aceeaşi atenție ca cele principale, ajungi să le îndrăgeşti sau să te dezguste, dar nu-ți pot fi indiferente. Povestea celor trei nu e singura poveste de dragoste şi nici singura poveste de dragoste în care există suferință. Ai parte de neprevăzut, de întorsături de situații, luptă pentru putere, decizii cu privire la care fiecare are propria lui părere, chiar şi de un praf de umor.

Aş putea să discut despre carte destul de mult timp, dar riscul de a vă dezvălui prea multe e mare. În schimb, voi face altceva. Vă dau ocazia de a câştiga volumul 1 al seriei. Ştiți deja ce trebuie să faceți!
