He Knows How Lucky He Is...
That Doesn't Mean He's Happy
I get it - A lot of folks would kill to be in my shoes. I make my living playing guitar. That beach anthem you’ve had on repeat all summer – the one with the pickup trucks and drinking beer by the bonfire… I’m the guy playing that killer guitar riff on it.
The problem is, I hate my job.
I’d rather be playing classical music. I want my legacy to be more than the answer to some question in a game of music trivia. In a guitar-town like Nashville, though, gigs playing my kind of music are few and far between.
My brother-in-law lines up an audition for me with a classical musician looking for someone to play on tour, and I jump at the chance. When I meet the brooding star for the first time, though, I know I’ve signed on for a lot more than I bargained for. She may be young, but she’s endured pain enough for a lifetime, and more. Peeking through that broken armor of hers is more beauty than I thought was possible in one person.
I’ve never been the type of guy to settle down with one woman. She’s making me rethink that, and just about everything else I thought I knew.
She’s looking for forever. I just hope that’s a promise I can keep.
EXCERPT
“Are you going home? To your sister’s house,” she replied curtly.
“Yeah, just callin’ a car.” I said, holding up my phone.
“I’ll drop you.” She said.
“You don’t have to...,” I started to object. I certainly didn’t want her doing me any favors.
“It’s on the way. Lucas and Georgia live right around the corner from me. It’s no trouble.” She held up her keys and pointed toward the parking lot across the street.
I shrugged, put my phone in my pocket, and followed her across the road.
I put my Martin carefully in the back seat of the Mercedes and strapped it in with the seatbelt.
“That’s a bit much, isn’t it?” Lauren asked.
“That guitar is worth more than I am.” I chuckled.
“It’s a thing. A thing can be replaced. People can’t be.” She took a deep breath. “It’s on Chesam, yeah?”
“Yeah, thirty-five,” I replied as I buckled my seatbelt. I had ridden around London with Lucas plenty, but I was still a little freaked out every time I got into a British car. Wrong side of the car. Wrong side of the road. Just wrong.
“I’m on Belgrave Square. About two blocks away,” Lauren said dryly as we took off across the city.
“So, why you got an American accent?” I asked.
She let out a small sigh. “My Dad was in consular service. We were in Atlanta most of my childhood.” I caught her glance at me from around the side of her glasses, although I could see she was trying hard not to let me see it. “Don’t let the accent fool you, or the London address. I’m a Highland girl, through and through. My family go back in the Inverness area throughout recorded history. The Highlands are home. I go there every chance I get.”
Interesting. She was opening up to me a little for some reason. I chose to take it as an olive branch. Maybe I had been a little hard on her.
I took her concentration on the afternoon traffic on the busy London streets as an opportunity to examine her more closely. She was incredibly gorgeous, despite her surly disposition. Her face was round with full, high cheeks and small, plump lips. If she were anyone else in the world, she’d be just the type of girl I’d go for.
