REVIEW - Peripheral Visions and Other Stories by Nancy Christie

“There are years that ask questions and years that answer”—Zora Neale Hurston

REVIEW

Well, this is a book you SHOULD read!

If you don't already know, short stories are (some of) my favorites. And hard to find. I think is more challenging to write a good short story than a full-length novel and the only concession I'm willing to do is to... say that it is equally hard. Why? Because of the message, the emotion that must reach the readers has to be summed up just in a few words, pages. And Mrs. Nancy Christie knows this well, very well. The proof is her Peripheral Visions and Other Stories Collection.

I have some favorites, but if I had to choose the short stories I liked from this collection I would have had to copy-paste the Table of Content in its entirety. This is very rare.

20 short stories to ignite your mind and heart!

Their themes and subjects are different, the characters (ordinary yet special in their individuality) and the relationships between them are varied. But all these stories have in common the feelings stirred up in the readers' souls. From the first word to the last, the emotion grows, intensifies, surrounds the reader preparing him/her for the final blow.  Challenging situations, sad to dramatic outcomes, and sometimes a touch of hope. There is no wasted word. Some are totally sad, other ironic, others are of dark humor. All of them make you contemplate life in general and your own experiences in particular. All of them are marked by the author's writing skills. This is a case in which the saying "those who can't do, teach" is incorrect.

So, yes, this is the book you all SHOULD read!

What do you do when the hand that life deals you isn’t the one you wanted? In Peripheral Visions and Other Stories, the characters choose to play the best game they can with the cards they’ve received. For some, it’s making the most of the circumstances in which they find themselves, even if it’s not the life they planned. For others, it’s following an unconventional path—not the easiest course or the one that others would take, but the one that’s right for them. But they never lose hope that life will get better if they can just hold on.
