When There’s No Time For Carpe Diem
We face far too many choices and decisions each day to be completely at ease with the journey we take, and it’s this outlook that drove me to write TICK to the TOCK. I wanted to consider what life would be like if it was suddenly taken away from me: how I would live if a deadline was placed in front of me.
That’s what Dante King faces in TICK to the TOCK. He’s a young, average twenty-two-year-old given a few months to live. He’s spent a lifetime living in tomorrow and planning to do so much, but achieving very little along the way. I myself have travelled and worked abroad and ticked a number of items off my bucket list, but I still look back on many moments and wonder about what could have been.
Don’t we all?
And I’m not saying it’s practical to live a life free of responsibility and doing as we please, because most people have dreams of settling down and raising a family and finding a job they enjoy. We all want happiness, but it comes in so many forms.
But it’s too easy to live in tomorrow and delay ambitions and dreams. There’s always another day, until the time arrives where it’s all taken away. I won’t lie either, TICK to the TOCK was a damn hard book to write, because I had to think about my life, where I’ve come from, what I’ve done and what I haven’t, and all those moments I long to have back, wish I’d done differently, or simply desire to live again.
I also won’t go as far as saying I now have it all figured out or have rid myself of regret, because like I said in the beginning of this post, I don’t believe this is possible. I do appreciate what I have though, and I also appreciate happiness comes in many forms, and so long as we surround ourselves with good people, say yes to crazy things, and test our ability from time-to-time, we won’t go far wrong.
TICK to the TOCK took me on an emotional rollercoaster, and if you choose to read it I sense it’ll take you on the same. You may laugh and cry and ball your fists in frustration, but what I hope above all hopes is that it makes you take a step back and think about your own life: where you’ve come from, where you are, and where you could go.
Because we have no idea what tomorrow actually holds, and as Dante finds out in my latest novel, it’s never too late to live & love. My name is Matthew Turner and I have many regrets. But I also search for happiness and edge a little closer each day. Writing this book helped me realise this, and it’s a journey I’ll never forget.
