Excerpt and Giveaway Clan by Realm Lovejoy

Description:

Clans are Unity.

No variation. No deviation.

On Clades, to be a Clan is to be an exact copy.
A perfect society cloning themselves to survive, even as the zombielike Frags threaten to overrun them on an unforgiving planet.

Clan 1672 (privately known as Twain) was never supposed to survive the Incubation Tank.
But he did. Illegally.
He is different from the other Clans.

A secret that could destroy him.

Kirkus Reviews: "In this fast-paced novel, Lovejoy uses economical prose while developing the story’s characters and setting in detail. She also meets the challenge of creating memorable characters in a world of identical people..." (Read more here!)

EXCERPT

“Don’t you wonder more about those Clans back there?”

“Okay. Well, they don’t seem to be following rules.”

Shadows flickered and litter rustled as they floated through the alley.

“When you stray from the Clan ways it’s hard to get back into the system. The society is pretty rigid, you know. You’re trapped with a number, and that number has even more numbers attached to it… those damned points. Clones that turn to narcissism, individualism, and favoritism will automatically be executed. Those Clans we saw there, the adult is a Second-Batcher. His points were so bad they were going to execute him for defying Unity and his kid, who they thought must be corrupt being raised by him. The two ran away, took their chips out, and hid here to live, unable to go to Krumbly’s themselves for food, since they can’t get klastos. What do you think about that?”

Shock hit Twain as the idea sank in. He had no idea that Clans could “escape” or even get their chip removed and successfully hide. These thoughts weren’t good to have. He shivered as he rubbed the area between his collarbones, where his own chip was. How did Buster even know so much about the alley life?
“What do I think?” Twain asked.

“Yeah, you know, the voice in your head. What does it say?”

“I don’t know,” Twain hedged. “I think the rules are there for a reason, although I don’t think that Clans should get rejected like that.”

“I see. Well, my opinion can be seen there.” Buster pointed above the buildings.

Twain looked over to the Hive, the central building in Clades where Clans went to be born, to be incinerated upon death, to learn to Contribute, and to be punished for not Contributing. On the outermost bulge of the building, a scrawl of graffiti could be seen: Unity is Chaos.

Twain gasped. “You defaced the Hive?”

“Yeah, I’d be in big trouble if they knew—but… hey, it could have been anybody. There’s a silver lining to being a clone, eh?”

Twain rubbed his head, unsure what to say to such blatant lawbreaking. Who is Buster?
