GUEST POST
A little bit about the characters in The Clay Queen

The Clay Queen is the product of a very long process years in the making. Many years ago I had a scene in my head. I saw a god and her angel who were fascinated by her human creations. And then a scene with a very brutal harsh ruler and a captive queen. I said to myself, write this down and let’s see where this goes and that’s how this series, The Children of Clay, was born.

The scene was set 7,000 years into a dystopian future that had all the pressures of a dystopian post-apocalyptic world that had regressed technologically. But then I wondered, how did they get here? And then it occurred to me that this was a time travel story and working with that idea, I wrote the original draft which was a time travel novel of these characters going back in time. I was pretty satisfied with what I had. But as a writer, these characters are alive and grow in your mind. One such character was a woman named Nouei.

She was originally an absent character in this post-apocalyptic world, a renowned queen and wife of this cruel leader. She was special, loved, revered, and feared even by this leader. She loomed large in the background but never made an appearance. I was so taken with her and decided to write out a scene for her and that’s when I realized that she knew and understood far more than she was letting on. She was no ordinary queen. Slowly, the story evolved and began to revolve around her until finally, it became about her.

That initial draft novel turned into two and then three and then four novels, each covering a time period of the reincarnated existence of certain characters in this post-apocalyptic world. I decided then to begin the series in our present time and skip the post-apocalyptic roots of this world, which bleeds through in quiet ways, but will make a strong appearance soon. So what was the first book has now morphed into five novels, the first of which is The Clay Queen and the next is Clay to Ashes.

In The Clay Queen, we are introduced to Nouei, and as noted earlier, she is a character whose presence underlies the entire story, but maintains her distance while her reincarnated self, Bridget Blade wades through this world trying to figure out who she is and how to manage the divine aspects of her personality. There is also the strange time-travel-y tension that both women exist at the same time and Nouei is watching Bridget and must nudge her in the direction of the future Nouei wants. She may even have a trick up her sleeve. But the paradox is that even though Bridget and Nouei are the same person, Bridget is an independent person with free will and can ultimately make her own choices about how she wants to direct her life. I love it--love the tension.
