EXCERPT

They headed into the bar like a blend of a first date giddy with excitement and an old married couple who knew every step the other was about to take. It was the oddest feeling, and Hope could see he felt it, too. They had martinis at the bar and then moved to a table for dinner in the art deco–styled restaurant. A piano player serenaded the room, but they felt as though it was all for them, as no one else seemed to exist. They held hands and talked about all the things they would do if nothing else were standing in their way. 

As the night came to an end back in 771, Hope slipped into a beautiful white silk negligee and slipped in next to Adler’s naked body. He kissed her soulfully and quietly, now drunk from martinis and more wine over dinner, not to mention the after-dinner cocktails they’d had while dancing in the bar. He slipped his hand up her nightgown and simply caressed her body. “It’s going to be a good weekend,” he said, and they were both fast asleep. . .
