One of the most common questions I receive is where I got the inspiration for my heroes in The Divine Chronicles. The entire series began as a dream, as many of my books do. In my dream I remember seeing a woman crouched down in a cell, tortured and afraid. Suddenly the cinderblock wall explodes and in comes an awe-inspiring hero, his long leather jacket flowing around his huge body. The girl sees her relief reflected in his glowing eyes.
As I wrote this scene, first in a journal I keep by my bed for such early morning inspirations and then once again on my laptop, I had to answer a lot of questions. Why was she captured? Why was she tortured? Why was he rescuing her? Who was he? Why could he take down a cinderblock wall? How did he do it? What happened before and after?
It took me a while to work out all the details as I saw fit. But I remember thinking, “Here’s my hero, standing there looking like a modern day Greek god—HEY!” I’ve always been interested in Greek mythology and love to study the various gods and their powers. There are a lot of less than tolerable things about the gods (i.e. eating their young and incest) that I knew I would have to take with a grain of salt.
Coming up with my version of Thracian warriors was fun for me. I read about the various war gods and stumbled across their legends. The more I read about Thrax, Ares, and the ferocious Thracian soldiers, my Olympian world came together. I crafted a hierarchy in which Zeus created a race of supernatural humans on earth and gifted them with various powers of the gods. He appointed Deities, or kings, to rule each of the habitable continents. To assist these kings are the Divine Graces, women of heart and spirit and wisdom. These ruling couples guide the Olympians of Earth.
To protect these gifted people, Zeus’s son, Ares, anointed the Thracian soldiers as a mighty military controlled by one man, the Master. Ryse, the Master Thracian of The Divine Chronicles, is a hybrid—the son of Deities and a Thracian. Never in their history has this occurred and it causes rumors and problems for Ryse and his family.
Ryse is one of the most powerful beings on the planet and as with anyone in power, there is always someone ready to take their place by any means necessary. I hope you will take some time to get to know Ryse, Avery and all the Olympians of The Divine Chronicles.
