GUEST POST
Secrets & Stories
Something
we all have is secrets. I say for the most part I’m an open book, I’m honest
about who I am and I can embrace emotion. Yet the reason I write is so that I
can express deeper emotions that I don’t always talk about with everyone.
Feelings I felt when as a young child I was bullied so horribly at school that
I tried to kill myself when I was only seven years old or the emotions I felt
after tragically losing a loved one at the young age of ten years old are much
easier for me to write about than to express openly. Not that I am not
expressive, because I am, but talking to others about secrets or real life plot
twists are much different than writing about them. When I write, I hold nothing
back. I talk through issues and then, the rest of it… the other deeper emotions
about moving through those things and finding healing and confidence in
yourself. Sometimes, there is no clear resolution in life. Many times you just
have to walk forward anyway. You learn that is okay to walk away.
Using
the secrets about Olivia throughout Two Thousand Lines was natural. I realized
one day years ago that getting to know people is much like opening a book to
someone’s past. The way people react or engage with others is directly related
to their past, which is often fraught with secrets and pain. Revealing those
help us understand why people behave the way they do. I often say at
conferences that men think it’s difficult to understand women, but we’re easy!
To truly know anyone, man or woman, is to know this basic principal: seek to
find why they act or react the way they do and you will understand them
completely. For most people it isn’t always about the here and now, it’s often
about the then and how.
Revealing
Olivia’s past the way I did wasn’t really planned or strategic. Using secrets
can often backfire because either the reader figures it out before they are
revealed or the secret doesn’t seem as big to the reader as you wanted it to
be. I simply revealed Olivia’s journey, her actions and reactions, in the way
people truly learn about one another in real life, the way it happens
naturally… one step from the past at a time.
