Review The Eagle's Conquest (The Roman / Eagle #2) by Simon Scarrow

I remembered that I have not written anything for a long time about Macro and Cato . Did you have forgotten them? I believe it's possible because it's been a long time since I have not told you anything about them, but you wanted other subjects, am I right? How about you go back to the history lessons? Yes, The Eagle's Conquest is a historical fiction book that is based on real events with fictional characters, but also with some characters that really existed.

For our newest friends, Macro and Cato are the main characters of The Roman Series by Simon Scarrow. They are soldiers in the Legion II of the Roman Imperial Army in the reign of Claudius. In the first volume, the author presents their adventures through the dark woods of Germania, the hard times through which Cato, as fresh recruit in the army, have to endure all the comrades’ baffles and that because he had been enlisted directly as optio, i.e. subordinate to a centurion. The book one ends with the beginning of the invasion in Britania and in this second volume will continue the adventure.

An invasion by sea is something that puts on the test even the today military forces, so you can imagine how this thing held two thousand years ago, in 43 AD. Invasion is underway, but troops are still insufficient, and they must face an enemy full of hatred and decided to take the neck of the Romans. Macro and Cato are caught up in all sorts of bloody ambushes, but the most important problems are not the sword blades of the locals, but a secret organization that opposes the emperor and endanger their lives by trying to make the invasion to fail. Enemies become stronger, mysteries multiply, and rumors that the emperor will arrive in Britania produces agitation within the conspiracy. Traitors are many and merciless. Cato wakes up, wittingly or unwittingly, caught in their way and his life will hang by a thread of hair. Time is running against them, and the victory can turn into a disaster at any moment. Can Cato survive on the battlefield, but also to dismantle the attempt what is plotting against the emperor? That you'll find it if you read the book yourself as you you’ll find, in the same time with our hero, that love doesn’t bring only happiness.

The book is well written, references and historical details are present and properly documented. The characters are strongly shaped, the relations between them are well settled, and the entwining of the fictional characters with real ones is perfect. The battle scenes are vividly represented and will surely delight those who love them. This is a novel that deserves to be read both from the point of view of the pleasant leisure and from historical point of view. I do not think there are many who can say that they do not like ancient history. Dates and events that are included in the book are interesting, and the author describes in detail the life in the Roman Empire and the native population of Britania.

Happy reading and I’ll see you at the third volume!

Like GZM!

Fiecare gen are specificul si valoarea lui.
