GUEST REVIEW

Review by Betty B

‘Building Mountains From Dust’ is an inspiring memoir by a woman suffering from lung cancer. Dr. Kimberly Young has lived a pretty healthy lifestyle and does not smoke. However, she was experiencing a persistent cough that just wouldn’t go away. After going through testing, her doctor discovers that she has lung cancer and it is in her lymph nodes.

Kimberly can’t believe it. Her husband Jim, 20 years her senior, is the one with health issues, not her. She is told she is not a candidate for surgery but that would be re-evaluated after chemo therapy. With the support of Jim and her closest friends she gears up for battle. She fights with dignity. After chemo-therapy, the cancer has shrunk and it is decided that she should undergo radiation. Meanwhile, Jim dies. It is such a blow but Kim stays strong with her faith and the help of friends.

‘Building Mountains From Dust’ is an inspiring memoir that anyone who has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease or their family members should read. I give it five out of five stars.

Like ‘When Breath Becomes Air’ by Paul Kalanithi and Abraham Verghese, ‘Building Mountains from Dust’, award winning author, Kimberly Young shares her story of survival and inspiration. At fifty, Kimberly’s structured, organized, and driven life is thrown into a tailspin when she is diagnosed with advanced staged lung cancer.

Never a smoker, Kimberly makes frank reflections about her decision not to have children, and how she makes peace with her mother, who abandoned her over fifteen years ago. This is a story about heart-wrenching life lessons, forgiveness, and about finding faith, as in a tragic twist of fate; Kimberly survives her cancer when her husband of twenty years suddenly dies.
