I, Aidan Stone, got the girl.
My beautiful Eevie is sweet and sassy, and she owns my heart like no other. I promised her, I’d always protect her, and I meant it, but shit just got serious.
Blackmail. Extortion. And Eevie is the target.
Sometimes the past comes back to haunt us. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to distance yourself from it, it comes back and bites you on the arse. And in walks Mr Hotshot Detective, Ryan Clark, thinkin’ he can save the day and take my girl.
Well, I’ve got news for him.
Not many people know that I, Eevie Lawson, have a problem. An addiction to romance novels. I eat them for breakfast. I hide it the best I can, but I need them to breathe. It’s how I cope.
I’ve had a swag of book boyfriends, but now that I’m free from the responsibility of caring for my three younger brothers, it’s time to find one in the flesh.
In real life, no girl meets their hero on page one, or even at the end of chapter one. I should know.
My journey is real. It’s not perfect, and it sure as hell isn’t easy—but the fight for something worthwhile never is.
EXCERPT
Today,
I feel like a king with a convincing win under my belt, and the beauty on my
arm is the envy of most of the guys here. Life can’t get any better.
I
introduce Eevie around. She shakes hands like she means it, holds her own in
conversation, and gets the occasional laugh out of guys I didn’t think had a
sense of humour. She must’ve been taking note of some of the ins and outs of
motocross, having the balls to ask some interesting questions.
Take
note, people: funny, intelligent woman with the guts and looks to match. That
confidence is heartbreak material. They’re practically drooling over her. It’s
almost pathetic. If they thought they had half a chance, they’d be down on
their knees in a millisecond begging for a shot.
Boys,
it ain’t gonna happen. Every delectable inch of her is mine, including her
heart.
Talking
with some of the support crew, Jones edges his way into the conversation,
standing a little close to Eevie for my liking. He puffs out his chest, and
hooks his thumbs through the front loops of his jeans. Blonde hair and a baby
face, he’s a pretty boy. A mummy’s boy. From the way he carries on, he
probably got everything he ever wanted as a kid, and had all the latest gear.
Mum could barely afford to buy my jerseys, and when she did, I wore them until
I outgrew them. I had no choice but to make them last. Last round Jones threw a
tantrum like a three year old over something stupid. He got what he wanted,
though. Disgusting. Not that I give a shit where he’s come from; at
least I know I don’t carry on like a fucking twit.
My
eyes are on Jones, and he knows it. Damn it, if he doesn’t like pushing my
buttons, and having Eevie here he’s gonna do anything he can to push. If he
weren’t on my team I’d barely give him the time of day. He’d be half an alright
bloke if he wasn’t so self-absorbed.
He
acts like he’s engrossed in what Eevie’s talking about, but his eyes travel
down her chest, and even lower, as if he’s trying to rip her clothes off purely
with the power of his mind. It heats my blood more than it should.
“When
you’re ready for a real man, Eevie, come knockin’ on my door,” Jones says. His
eyes dart in my direction before resting back on Eevie’s tits. Fucking douchebag.
Eevie
frowns, and purses her glossy lips. “Sorry, I don’t understand. If I’m ready
for a real man, why would I knock on your door? Wouldn’t I just
go home?” She bats those long lashes. That’s my girl.
Everybody
erupts into a fit of laughter, me louder than most. Jones shakes his head, and
playfully punches me in the arm. “You’re killin’ me, Aidan. You win today, and
I hate you for it, and now your woman’s gonna break my heart,” he says, faking
a southern American accent. He clutches his chest as if wounded, and winks at
Eevie.
I
take a long swig of my beer. “Life’s a bitch, Jones.” Now fuck off.
*****************
“This
guy is fuckin’ dangerous, Ryan. Does this chick have any idea who she’s been
dealing with?” Senior Detective Parker asks, the warning tone in his voice
confirming how dangerous this situation is.
“Not
a clue.” She’s as innocent as she is sexy, but she doesn’t know it.
“We’ve
gotta be smart about this, Ryan. She trusted you enough to tell you, and this
is the closest we’ve been to the target for a good while. I’m not gonna tell
you how to play it—this is your lead—but understand that the top dogs will be
breathing down my neck and yours to get a result.”
At
twenty-eight, this is gonna make or break my career. The weight already feels
like ten times the amount I bench-press. “I know, man. Don’t worry, I know.”
“Alrighty,
then. Keep me updated.”
“Will
do.” I hang up the phone and, using my spare key, let myself into the house.
Cass
and Eevie are sipping wine at the dining table, their dinner plates empty.
“Ryan,”
Cass says bluntly.
At
least Cass doesn’t look as pissed at me as she did yesterday. Ever since I
slept with one of her girlfriends from college, she’s hasn’t trusted me around
her friends. Even though her friend from back then, whatever her name was, knew
exactly what she’d been getting into. I don’t need to promise them the world to
get them naked in my bed. I don’t think her friend told her what really
happened. How she begged me to do things that would make a seasoned pro blush.
How she loved every single minute of it, until I reminded her it was a one-off
and thanked her for stopping by.
“Hey,
Ryan,” Eevie says with resignation, a weak smile gracing her plump kissable
lips.
I’ve
always made a point of distancing my career and my women, but this one … hell,
I don’t know what it is about her. Firstly, Cass made it crystal clear to me
some time ago to stay away from her. Cass should know better than anyone that
you can’t tell Ryan Clark not to do something. I’m surprised I’ve managed to
steer clear of Eevie for so long, but I guess there have been enough women
around to keep me satisfied. Secondly, she seems so innocent, yet from the
brief few seconds of what I saw of that tape she’s all animal underneath.
Thirdly, she’s a fucking hot damsel in distress. Enough said.
“Hey,
gorgeous.” I smile at Eevie, trying to put her at ease. I sit at the table
across from her. “You’ve certainly got a bit more colour in your cheeks today,”
I say, my words that little bit deeper than normal. Eevie smiles, and a flush
of pink spreads over her chest and deepens the colour in her cheeks. Yeah, I
have an effect on her. I have to try so bloody hard not to rest my eyes on
those perfect tits. I wonder if I’ve got a shot here, or if I’m dreaming.
“Thanks,”
she says shyly, and distracts herself with a sip of wine.
“Any
news?” Cass asks, bringing my head back to business. There is purpose to this
visit, and it’s not just me checking out the hottie with glasses.
“Yeah.
How ‘bout a slice of that pie on the counter first? You know I can’t resist a
good tart.”
“You
dick,” Cass says. She gets up and shakes her head, grumbling to herself as she
walks into the kitchen. Laugh once in a while would ya, Cass? I made
Eevie smile, anyway.
“Did
you manage to get some sleep?” I ask Eevie, now we’re alone.
“Yeah.
I feel better for telling you guys, but that still doesn’t change the mess I’m
in. I just hope it doesn’t make it any worse.”
The
poor girl looks like the weight of this is crushing her. Perhaps she’d prefer
the weight of me on top of her instead. I reckon I’d know how to keep a smile
on that beautiful face.
