The perfect fantasy heroine
What makes the perfect fantasy heroine? That is a question that is difficult to answer, because there is no set answer to the question. Each person has their own idea of what entails the perfect heroine. So, all I can do is tell you what I think makes a perfect heroine, and hopefully, you will agree. J
Chandrea, my heroine, is young, making her somewhat naïve. She doesn’t have the life experience and knowledge behind her that an older, more mature woman would have, and therefore life can be a bit more overwhelming and difficult for her. (Now that I am older, I sometimes look back at my younger self and wonder how I ever muddled through without the knowledge that I now have.)
Chandrea is also one who has experienced horrific tragedy first-hand, and more than once. She knows she is an orphan and knows that she was adopted. But, life deals her an extraordinarily bad hand when she looses her adoptive parents as well to a massive car accident, making her an orphan twice over. Becoming a survivor makes her strong in so many ways…small and large. It gives her a core of steel to fall back upon when destiny steps in and deals her the ultimate wild card: sending her back to her birth world, throwing her into the middle of a magical war, and pitting her against an evil warlord. Though faced with what seems like insurmountable odds, and basically stranded on what amounts to her as an alien world, Chandrea pulls from that strength to help her not only to survive, but to begin to flourish. To make friends and re-define her own personal world. To adjust to her new surroundings and begin to make a new life for herself.
She is a survivor. Someone who no matter what life throws at her, she just keeps getting up, dusting herself off, and moving on. She may have a few more scars to show for it—both mentally and physically—but it’s just not in her nature to give up.
She has a great passion for those she loves. Having grown up not knowing her origins or her blood family has made her love those she does have dearly. She holds them close to her heart and loves them openly and without pretense—but this also can cause her great pain if she has to let them go. It also makes it difficult for her to deal with change as she holds tightly to that which brings her peace, whether it be a place or a person.
She has a wonder for life. She knows from personal experience how very fragile it is, how easily it can be taken from you, and therefore she lives in the moment. Even though she is overwhelmed by her sudden re-appearance in her birth world, she can’t help but be amazed at the beauty she encounters on a daily basis. To gaze in awe at the spectacular creatures that appear before her, and be humbled by the awesome power she suddenly find within herself.
So this is my idea of a “perfect heroine”—or maybe I should say an “imperfect” heroine. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for listening!
