Description:
When Emma Anderson arrived at San Francisco International Airport, she regretted accepting the distinction of being the maid of honor to Gaby’s—her childhood friend—wedding. It had been years since the last time she set foot in Menlo Park, where her parents had been killed. The rug where she had been shoving her feelings since that day looked bumpier than a camel’s hump. Who could blame her; if she hadn’t been selfish they’d still be around. Ever since that fateful day, Emma has been perfecting the knack of Getting By.
Cade’s wedding in Menlo Park—a city close to San Francisco—might be the perfect place for Jake Knight to shake the memories of his ex, Emma Anderson for good. Single, available women galore for an entire week was the perfect medication, one he intended to take three times a day for an entire week to return to his player days. It was a plan the former spy thought flawless until he came face to face with the maid of honor. Jake’s perfect retreat turns into a flight, fight or hide week of celebrations.
GUEST POST
Are writers stealing your soul?
That got your attention. There are a few religions and cultures that believe or used to believe that taking a photograph can steal a soul, imprisoning it within the paper where it had been taken. The belief goes back centuries, and you can trace it even to mirrors. Now from there we’re talking portals, the prediction of the future and being trapped inside some other dimension.
What does that have to do with writers?
As a writer, I base a few of my character’s attributes and flaws on people I know, friends, acquaintances and yes, family. For example: The nose crinkle-scratch that Emma’s character does each time she’s nervous it’s based on a family member. Paulina, whom I dedicated the book to.
Jake’s family…
My favorite aunt and uncle, who have a fun marriage; three handsome sons—30 and 26 <- twins—and the boys are currently available. Though, none of the Knight Brothers share traits with my cousins; there are a few that Jake’s parents that do with my aunt and uncle. You can say, that It was as if I took a mental picture of them; developed it through the plot and as a result got a set of fun parents for my MC. A bit of their personalities is now preserved forever inside my book, just like a bit of a few other family members I have. Or that girl I didn’t like much in high school and became an antagonist of another book. In theory, I’m preserving what I think is the part of them that made me love, admire, like, fear, despise or enjoy their company.
This shouldn’t be surprising. After all, it is a well-known fact; that authors are observers of the world, and based on those observations, they write what their minds develop. That of course translates in a simple thing: we are not stealing anyone’s soul. Only borrowing the coolest part of you. And, of course, if you’re pretty nice, you might end up paired with the man of your book dream.
