INTERVIEW

How much of yourself is hidden in the characters in your book? 

Disappointingly, not very much. My love of horses I project into my books, perhaps more than my readers like (though I hope not), and make my characters horse lovers, too. I think I’d be a pretty bad-ass warrior if I wanted to be, but not like Ly’Tana. Nor do I ride as well as she.

How do you develop and differentiate your characters? 

I like creating personal foibles, like Ly’Tana’s humour, the exchanges between Raine and Rygel, Witraz’s lack of deference and either Alyn or Rannon smacking his head for his lack of respect. That adds to each character and makes them real to my readers.

Do you have specific techniques you use to develop the plot and stay on track? 

No. I have a series of events I want/need to happen for the story, add subplots, write the sequence of events and then edit in foreshadowing, character realizations, dialogue, etc. Yeah, I’m the dreaded seat of the pants writer.

How (or when) do you decide that you are finished writing a story? 

Um, this is going to sound really bad, but I’m truthful – when the story goes on too long. I think I have a point in which I want the book to end, and behold! It’s over 200,000 words. Crap. Find a place to cut, create an ending and voila! The book is done and the next book half started.
