Feel the Suspense
Suspense. sus·pense: a state of feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.
Suspense can keep you glued to your seat in a movie, or turning pages in book; it can make your heart pound and your pulse race. But above all, it elicits a strong emotional response. A memorable response.
And there is nothing more memorable than the suspense of being stalked by a criminal with an AK-47.
Is it any wonder, I was drawn to romantic suspense when I first became a writer?
I have been an attorney for many years. I’ve practiced in small firms, big firms, boutique firms, and in one of the largest law firms in the world. I could fill books with my war stories. But the one story that has most informed my writing is the story about the client who threatened to kill me with his AK-47 because he didn’t want to pay his bill after his divorce.
Yes, my friends. Law can be a dangerous profession.
It wasn’t the first time I had been threatened, so when I received the phone call I did what most threatened lawyers do. Nothing. Often the threats are just irritated people blowing off steam and nothing ever comes of them. Unfortunately, this client was a bit different. When I didn’t scream or cry or immediately cancel the bill, he called the Law Society and told them he was on his way to my office, AK-47 in hand. The Law Society called the police. But...oops. They forgot to tell me.
So there I was on a sunny weekday afternoon, sipping coffee and drafting documents in my office when suddenly the front door exploded open with a crash. I ran into the hallway only to see a wave of flak-jacketed, black-helmeted, armed police pouring into the office.
“Get down! Get down!”
My colleagues and I threw ourselves down, covering our heads with our hands as boots thundered around us and police officers ran into our offices, closing windows and blinds and yelling “clear.” Phones were unplugged, computers turned off, and over the walkie-talkies we heard about police on the roof and officers establishing a perimeter around the building.
It was just like the movies. Suspense. Drama. Excitement. We had no idea why our office had been locked down until one of the police officers said: “Which one of you is Sarah?”
Uh oh. Maybe that threat was a real threat after all.
Of course, there is more to the story. Much more. Evacuation, police protection, taunting criminals, disguises, escape attempts, trials in locked courtrooms, undercover stings...all the usual excitement. We’ll save that for another book **winks**. In the end, though, the bad guy was caught and put in jail. Hurrah!
But that event stayed with me. Suspense. Drama. Thrills. Chills. Excitement. Mystery. And, of course, romance (in the end, all he really wanted was for his wife to come home). When I sat down to write Barely Undercover, I knew my book had to have all those things. And more. Smokin’ hot smex and a happily ever after ending. Oh, and there had to be down ‘n dirty outlaw bikers. Because once I had a client who was a member of an outlaw motorcycle club…but that’s another story.
