Fathoms of Forgiveness (Sacred Breath #2) by Nadia Scrieva

Description:

Meet the brave and fearless Visola; a woman unlike any you've ever encountered. Her wit and humor take her through the darkest of dangers with a smile always on her face--and her smile only grows larger as the odds become more impossible. With no concern for her own safety, Visola dives headfirst into the throes of battle to protect the people and country she loves, even if it means facing her worst enemy--the one man who can get inside her head and break her down like no other: her own husband...

There is no divorce in the undersea kingdom of Adlivun. Marriage is a bond that lasts until death--even if death comes in several centuries, and in that time your spouse happens to become your sworn enemy. This is the conflict that General Visola Ramaris faces when she learns that the mighty Vachlan is behind the attacks on her kingdom. She has sworn to protect Adlivun with her life, but long ago, she also swore to love and honor her husband...

Visola must choose whether she will destroy Vachlan once and for all, or attempt the hardest thing conceivable: communication. After two hundred years of desertion, she knows she can never forgive him. When he threatens the person dearest to her, she must take action. Confronting Vachlan on enemy territory would be nothing short of suicide. She knows that if she falls into his custody, the deranged mercenary would relish torturing her and making her lose her own sanity.

Princess Aazuria forbids Visola from taking matters into her own hands. She will do anything it takes to protect her friend from the man who wants to crush her. Alas, Visola is a crazy, uncontrollable warrior with the blood of Vikings in her veins. Why would she ever consider doing the safe and predictable thing?

Deep under Arctic waters lies an ice kingdom carved into a glacier. Those who dwell within it possess magnificent biological secrets. Due to the dangers of impending war, the Princess of Adlivun is forced to flee her undersea utopia and regroup with her sisters in Alaska.

Captain Trevain Murphy is a successful king crab fisherman who has spent his life building his empire above the sea, and knows nothing of the empire beneath it. When he meets a mysterious dancer whose father has recently died, he extends kindness towards her, unaware of her unique genetics and royal lineage.

Trevain's attraction to the enigmatic Aazuria Vellamo will involve him in dangerous designs that will forever change his life, and his perspective on himself and his world. He embarks on perilous journeys in which he will need to release all of his insecurities and inhibitions in order to survive.

 Excerpt

When Aazuria entered the room, her eyes were immediately drawn to Visola’s wild red hair, which had recently been a lustrous mass of audacious curls. Now, her hair was limp. It hung against her head flat, frizzy and defeated. Aazuria’s eyes darted to the warrior’s sunken cheekbones and gaunt face. She saw the bruises on Visola’s neck before her eyes traveled further to the withered, wasted limbs. Every visible part of her friend’s body was covered in fresh scars. She saw the bandaged hands. Visola had been starved and tortured.

Perhaps in these modern times, even under the surface of the sea, kings, queens, and the aristocracy had close to zero significance. Perhaps the words and decrees which left Aazuria’s mouth would have minimal consequences. No one in the throne room felt this way as they awaited Aazuria’s judgment with bated breath. Sionna was standing aside, with her arms crossed. The newly-crowned queen gripped her husband’s sword tightly in her fist as Trevain and Elandria entered the room behind her.

Aazuria shifted her eyes to the man standing beside her friend. Her face was expressionless.

“Approach me, Vachlan,” she whispered.

The man began walking toward her. Although his stride was dignified, there was hesitation on his face. Visola began speaking, pleading words which Aazuria could not hear over the sound of her heart pounding in her ears.

When Vachlan was close enough to strike, Aazuria gazed at him with death in her eyes.

“Kneel,” she commanded him. Her chest was rising and falling perceptibly.

Vachlan knew that this would be a very unwise thing to do, but he owed it to Aazuria. He owed it to Visola, and to Adlivun—the nation he had once called home. He lowered his head and dropped to one knee before the queen, saluting her across his chest. His eyes were level with the sword she held, and he could see the veins bulging through her translucent pale skin from how tightly she clutched it.

“It would be futile to order you punished,” she said slowly. “No one can even attempt to hurt you as much as you have hurt her.”

“I know,” he answered quietly.

“But it is my duty to try.”

She struck out with her sword, slicing the air until the blade collided with his face, knocking Vachlan off his knees and onto the floor. Aazuria could vaguely hear Visola screaming for her to stop, but she was already standing over Vachlan and forcing the tip of her sword between his teeth. Her previous strike had resulted in a huge bleeding gash along the side of his handsome face, but it had not been enough to kill him. She was poised to finish the job.

Vachlan moved his tongue against the steel, tasting the freshly-sharpened metal edge garnished with the metallic taste of his own blood. It is rare that the wine so perfectly accompanies the main dish, he thought as he swallowed the coppery fluid accumulating in his mouth. Kind of like a German Pinot Noir. He looked into the azure eyes of Adlivun’s queen and realized that this was no longer the innocent, charitable philanthropist he had known hundreds of years ago. She was hard. He wondered what percentage of the tempered rage behind her eyes he was responsible for generating.

“One reason.” Aazuria was demanding. “Give me one convincing reason that I should not thrust my blade directly through your skull.”

 Excerpt

The blast of a .38-caliber revolver sends me crashing to my knees, landing in the road, with gravel digging deep into the flesh of my knees.

My hands grip the gritty ground, as if my life depends on it, making my fingers bleed. Who knows, at this point, maybe it does.

Even with my eyes closed, I can feel the world spinning around me, my body threatening to give up and lose what control I have left. Tears stream down my horror-stricken face and a silent scream is threatening to form in my throat. It hurts. It hurts like hell.

That’s when I hear it. A bloodcurdling scream that makes my blood run cold. Except, it’s not my screaming that is roaring through my ears as I expected.

It’s the screaming of a woman. A very angry, hysterical woman.

The only thing I can decipher is, “Call 911. Somebody fucking call 911. There’s blood everywhere.”

I can hear bodies shuffling nearby, some of them even tripping over me to get away, but I can only process one thought. He’s gone. Please don’t let him be gone.

With force, I am yanked to my feet, a large hand smacking me across the face, causing blood to taste on my tongue.

I try to focus, but my vision is too blurred to make any sense of who has control of my body and at this point, I’m not so sure it even matters.

“This is your fault,” the deep voice growls as I spit blood onto his filthy boots. Narrowing his eyes, he wraps my hair securely around his hand and yanks my head back, hard, while his other hand tightens around my throat, squeezing. “You’re going to pay for this if it’s the last thing I do, you stupid bitch.”

He lets go of my neck and shoves me down to the ground so my face is pressed into the gravel, his boot crushing into the back of my skull. Dirt and rocks dig into my left eye, making it even harder to see through the tears. I desperately look for the man that hasn’t only crushed then stolen my heart just to crush it again, but has also replaced a part of me that I thought was long ago lost.

Realizing that my search is pointless, I just lay there defeated, feeling half-alive, but mostly dead. “Go ahead,” I whisper. “See if you can hurt me anymore than you already have. I dare you.” My body’s trembling, but I look him dead in the eye anyways. I’m not scared of dying. Not after losing the biggest part of me, my heart. “Losing him will be my last regret.” I shift so that I’m looking at the deep scars that cover his face. They make me sick. He makes me sick. “That and not killing you when I had the chance.”

Review and Giveaway Third Daughter (The Dharian Affairs Trilogy #1) by Susan Kaye Quinn

REVIEW:

At the age of eight I received as a gift a little book with Indian folk tales: The Story of Prince Sobur. At that time I fell in love with Indian stories and with the drawings that accompanied them and conveyed the splendor of the Indian world. Later, as any young person- I think - I went through the stage of Eastern spirituality. Years passed by, and unfortunately this fascinating world of contrasts and extremes began to be presented in bad taste. All the sensitivity, sense, and all the beauty seemed to be pushed aside, making room for the shrill and the vulgar. So, for me, The Third Daughter had to face the challenge of Bollywood (the name itself sounds so awkward). Fortunately, The Third Daughter has nothing to do with the bad taste.

Although the author’s major focus was on the details of the characters' attire, she was able to shape a fairy image of the Indian world and to create the necessary atmosphere for the story. But what clothes!! It was so easy to imagine them ... and to crave for them ... or for the jewelry ... Now do not think that there are no other details or that we will read a brief overview of the events. Everything is described in such a way, that you can see the story unfold before your eyes. A love story and not just that. A story in which are harmoniously entwined: the self-discovery and the true love, the coup d’Etat or sabre thrusts, the fantastic and the real, the things you can control and the ones that are controlling you, offered or desired kisses, the despair and broken hearts and hope. The pace is sustained: something is always happening, always a “special” line is served, something is always prepared to happen and you won’t feel how the focus will switch between the romantic and the adventurous side of the story. I think that the steampunk hardcore fans, especially those who are looking for the special contrivances and devices, will be satisfied, albeit the author does not go into too much technical detail. The steampunk elements are the heart of the story, but not the soul.

Regarding the characters, they are well built. I could put myself into Aniri’s place, I understood her fears and desires, I felt her pain. Even the slightly naivety that evanescence over time, never disappearing completely, is credible but not annoying, and gives flavor to the tale. The other characters are not neglected even if Aniri is the main character. Each has something to offer or to hide. As always, I chose from the beginning my "favorites" and I must admit that sometimes the author gave me “emotions”; she managed to creep doubts and to leave open annoying little doors for various possible scenarios.

In the end I can say that The Third Daughter gave me a state of wellness, made me fondly remember about the childhood tales and I think that many of you will like the story too.

PS: While preparing this post, I saw the subject of the following two volumes of the trilogy. I can only say that I wish that the author would turn it into a tetralogy so that there could be a book for Janak and Q. Read the book and see why!

And, of course, kissing.

Excerpt

“I love you, Aniri,” Devesh whispered.

When he pulled back, she smiled. “I hate to tell you this, Dev, but I already knew that.”

“If you go off with this Prince Malik, and anything happens to you, the Queen may dispense an army to come after you, but I will beat them there.”

Aniri drew in a shaky breath. Prince Malik said he would allow her a lover, even though arranged marriages were expected to be true marriages, especially among royalty. But could she live that kind of life? A secret love on the side while performing the duties of Queen in a foreign land? The idea made her shudder. It pained her every day her love for Devesh was kept hidden. She couldn’t imagine a lifetime of it. Nor could she picture Devesh, with his love of the court and all things political, banished to the frozen wastelands of the north simply to be her consort.

He must have seen the emotions warring across her face. “Tell him no, Aniri. Refuse him and come away with me. We could leave today.”

“Dev—”

He cut her off with a kiss. “We could return to Samir,” he whispered against her lips. “We won’t be rich, but we could travel anywhere you wished, all the places your father would have taken you. We would have all the time in the world. To be together. To learn the truth about your father’s killers. To make a family of our own.”

It was precisely what they had planned. Now it all seemed like a hopeless fantasy. “Dev, I can’t simply abandon my country. If I refuse Malik, and there is war to pay, I cannot just run away… Is this the confidence you wanted to tell me?”

Devesh looked torn, like there was something more he wanted to say but was holding it back. “I cannot offer you a Queendom, Aniri. My love is all I can promise. I hope it is enough to convince you to refuse Prince Malik’s offer.”

He stepped back, and with clasped hands and a short bow, he turned and strode away. Her heart tried to beat its way out of her chest to follow him. If she accepted Prince Malik’s offer, she would lose the man she loved.

Unlike the Jungali prince, she wasn’t sure that was a price she was willing to pay.

Interview and Giveaway: A Canter of the Heart (The Equestrian and the Aviator, #1) by E.E. West

Description:

A beautiful Australian para-equestrian, Eleanor, is rudely awakened the morning after her twentieth birthday to face two pressing problems: the first, though she refuses to accept it, is that she's been told by many acquaintances and relations that she'll never find true love, and the second being, though she doesn't know it yet, that she can't even get up the steps to visit the blasted night-club with her mates! What no one knows is that one random act of chivalry, at the hands of a handsome American naval flight officer, is about to turn her world upside down. The heartfelt and sometimes harrowing journey that follows is as humorous as it is inspirational.

A Canter of the Heart is the romance of a new millennium, a story that you've never heard before, and one that should take its place amongst the iconic romances of our time. But most importantly, it is a romance that will speak, most unapologetically, to your heart. A Canter of the Heart is the first book in ‘The Equestrian and the Aviator’ trilogy that sets our intrepid heroine on the journey of a lifetime. The first thing that you will no doubt discover is that Eleanor, fickle girl that she is, has already found the love of her life – her inspiring love of horses.

This trilogy is based on a true story, and is a testament to the therapeutic riding programs offered by the Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia. It is dedicated to the many remarkable, selfless people who made and continue to make those programs possible.

MB's INTERVIEW
Thank you, Mrs.  E.E. West
I truly believe in the therapeutic power of animals. Please, tell us more about Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia and how (if) did you include it in the story?
Riding programs for the disabled were established in Europe in the early fifties to improve the lives of those with physical disabilities, while the programs in Australia were established in the mid sixties to help riders with any form of disabilty. In this story, Eleanor's Mum had grown up on a farm in Devon, England, and, having been around horses her entire life, she set Eleanor up with her own horse, Snowy, and helped her ride every day as a form of exercise. Eleanor also studied dressage at Riding for the Disabled Association first in England, then West Australia.
For disabled riders, equestrian activities may be the best form of exercise available, requiring the use of every muscle in the body as well as stimulating cognitive abilities and helping with emotional and social issues. The bond that a rider forms while directing a one thousand pound horse, more or less depending on the breed, develops confidence and poise in a rider that no other activity can match. When you add the complexities of dressage to the picture, the pursuit of excellence in this field can become a life long obsession for any rider, disabled or not. In my way of thinking, when a disabled rider mounts their horse, they cease being a disabled rider and become, simply, an equestrian.

What does it take to transpose a true story in literature? How much did you (could you) change it?
Despite the fact that this story was set on a time-line, which started the day Eleanor and David met, and then progressed through the dates of the actual port calls of the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Abraham Lincoln as they applied to Eleanor and David, plus the dates for Eleanor's RDA dressage competitions and so on - much the way you might set out to write a piece of historical fiction - the story itself; the interaction of the characters, the emotions and motivations of each character, and how they interact, as well as how that impacted the final outcome of the story; was always fluid. Many of the locations visited, the characters, even the ending of the story changed during the writing of the manuscript depending on the way the story unfolded onto the page. This is truly more a work of romantic fiction about a young woman who loves horses and a young man who loves aviation, and how their love brought their two worlds together, than it was the re-telling of a true story.

There are so many love stories! In what way is “A Canter of the Heart a romance of a new millennium, a story that you've never heard before”?
I like this question, as it comes straight to the heart of this love story. It would be so easy to call this a 'Cinderella story', and many might nod their head, as there are many of the same elements, but this is the story of a woman who doesn't need a prince charming, as no one on earth, not even a prince, could give her what she truly wanted – to be like everyone else. Our heroine is also someone who has a beautiful life, full of horses, parents who love her, friends who believe in her, school to look forward to, and she lives in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Boyanup, West Australia. This really isn't a Cinderella story, or any form of a traditional love story for that matter.

While I'm at it, I could also compare 'A Canter of the Heart' to a long list of fiction written with disabled protagonists like 'Crazy Beautiful' by Lauren Baratz-Logsted, or 'Dancing with Clara' by Mary Balogh or 'The Boy Next Door' by Annabelle Costa, or a long list of movies and plays like 'An Affair to remember', '50 first dates', 'De rouille et d'os', or to a nearly infinite list of traditional romance novels. Yes, I agree that there is no end to the romance titles with which to compare, all with a different take on what constitutes love or what form of love is involoved - if love is even a factor in the relationship - and to what degree it motivates the protagonists. In many of these books there are similarities that can be drawn to one degree or another, but to date I haven't been able to pidgeon hole this book without noteable differences.

This novel is about a woman who is clearly in control of her world, despite an unfortunate disabililty, who isn't about to let anyone or anything stop her from living life to its fullest, who meets a man from the opposite side of the world with whom she has nothing in common, except, perhaps, love at first sight, and what becomes of it is the rest of the story, including two more books yet to come to further Eleanor's story. I say that this story should be 'a romance of a new millenium' almost as a dare for someone to show me a story that is similar – which could very well be out there – and while I can find ample examples of the various forms of love that comprise this book, I have yet to find any story like this one.

Do you believe that true love conquers all? What form has this idea (or its opposite) in „The Equestrian and the Aviator” series?
I wish it did. What I do believe is that if you are fortunate enough to find true love, embrace it, don't barter it. True love is as scarce as it is all encompassing, and it's likely to be your only opportunity to attain true happiness in this lifetime. I know the power of true love changes the way we see our world, and what we once saw as an obstacle may often be seen as an opportunity under the purview of true love, but nothing conquers all.

Canter, gallop… What rhythm is more suitable (or preferable) for a love story, in real life and in the literature? Why so?
The actual gait is less important than the transition and, in the transition to canter, attaining the proper lead. The cover of the book shows Eleanor in a gallop, but the reference in 'A Canter of the Heart' refers to Eleanor's difficulty with her transitions from trot to canter and how the change in rhythm can cause her to be thrown out of the saddle – this was both in real life and in the story. I won't say more as I don't wish to spoil the story, but this relates back to the power of true love and how things we once saw as obstacles can now be seen as opportunities.

About the author:
I've been a resident of the Pacific Northwest for the better part of two decades, and blithely accept life in the shadows of the nesting grounds of bald eagles while ensconced amidst the company of wild, damp and understandably nervous bunnies. I prefer to write at the dining room table, where the light is better and I can work next to Simon, the sweetest one hundred and twenty pound Rottweiler that you're ever likely to meet -- except when he's in the mood to editorialize, which he is only on rare occasions. I much prefer to write love stories that take place in warm, sunny and exotic locales as I admire and rate the latest downpour direct from the Pacific Northwest's over-active convergence zone, but in my heart I will forever be drawn back to the lucky country... Australia... and maybe one more lovely canter along an endless beach.

Realism in Fantasy

Well-crafted fantasy series have something in common – they feel real. Even if the story takes place in deep space, or magic and bizarre characters pop up at every twist and turn, readers will be able to relate if the world building is thoughtful and rooted in internal logic. With the Mad World series, we strive to keep the story grounded in reality. What better way to draw our readers into the madness?

With the first novel, Wakefield, we worked hard to craft a realistic setting. The main characters meet at a residential treatment facility for teens with psychiatric issues and, through their eyes, readers learn the ins and outs of institutional life. By allowing our characters to navigate and explore an environment entrenched in gritty realism, we provide readers with a way to relate to them and get to know them deeply. We hope that when paranormal elements begin to surface in Wakefield, readers experience them as a logical extension of the setting.

While Wakefield is grounded by the setting, the sequels explore the mythology behind the series, which we’ve steeped in real-world history. As a storyteller, the more realistic questions you ask yourself, the more immersive the world can feel. For instance, if something paranormal were really happening in the world in, say 1852, would U.S. President Millard Fillmore know about it? How would he handle it? By drawing connections to the world around us, we hope to create a richer tapestry for ourMad World characters to live in.

Interview and Giveaway: Werewolves of the West series by Carol Van Atta

Description:

Chloe Carpenter isn't like other women. She can communicate with animals. A gift she unwrapped following one of her frequent dances with death.

In her otherwise wacky life, she's finally found a semblance of sanity working at the Plum Beach Wildlife Park, where her unique talents can make life or death differences for the animals in her care. That semblance is shattered when a new veterinarian roars into the park in his spiffed up sports car and sets his golden gaze on her. If she had her way, he'd roar right back out.

Problem: He's her new coworker and he's saved her life twice - in the past twenty-four hours.

Zane Marshall, Enforcer for the Pacific Pack of purebred werewolves, has a job to do - figure out who or what is mutilating the young men of Plum Beach.

With orders to find the woman who talks to animals, he accepts a position working alongside the fiery Chloe Carpenter, a female who ignites his interest far more than he ever expected. Remarkably, she's the one elusive female with potential to bring meaning and passion to his empty existence.

Problem: She despises him.

Together, they're forced to unravel a mystery of supernatural proportions, a murderous mystery with eternal implications for everyone. In the process, they discover opposites really do attract.

Major Problem: Zane is pledged to another woman, and she'll do anything to keep him from Chloe.

Best selling author Melanie Larson’s relationship with her friend, Chloe Carpenter, is bleak. Falsely accused of murder, Chloe’s future rests in the hands of her mate, Zane Marshall, and the Pacific Pack’s purebred werewolves. In an effort to help, Melanie joins forces with the pack and soon discovers the monsters she writes about in her paranormal novels really do go bump in the night.

As Chloe struggles with legal troubles, an unwanted blood bond with a master vampire, and a reunion with her mate, Melanie untangles the attention of multiple supernatural suitors determined to claim her as their own. Strangely attracted to a brazen vampire, she must decide if the blurred line between passion and pain is worth crossing.

Werewolves, vampires, and fae royalty race to unearth an ancient artifact with the power to extend their existence. Can Chloe and Melanie restore their friendship in time to stop magical mayhem from ruining everything they’ve worked so hard to redeem?

MB's INTERVIEW
Thank you, Mrs.Carol Van Atta
There are so many approaches/views of vampires and werewolves! What is yours?
You are absolutely correct! There just happens to be a ton of conflicting theories floating through books, movies, and historic myths when it comes to these two, often-at-odds (more like throats), species.

Right away, readers of the Werewolves of the West series will discover my werewolf/vampire relations are not so black and white or us against them, a fact that might make some diehard, old school Vampire vs. Werewolf fans squeamish. Still, for the most part, vampires and werewolves are not bosom buddies, but they are not sworn enemies either. It’s far more complex. The two can indeed be friends, and are frequently required to work together to face common challenges or defeat mutual adversaries. My werewolves are not immortal like vampires and faeries, but they are stronger, faster, and way sexier than their human counterparts, and, each ‘wolf’ has varying degrees of magical skills at their disposal. They typically have the same life span as us (human beings). I’m assuming I have only human readers!

In addition, my werewolves can take three unique forms. First, they can appear human; secondly, they can take on the appearance of a majestic, oversized wolf; and then there is the more ‘mutant’ inspired form. This is the man-beast that walks on two legs and looks like a wolf-man with its long muzzle, fang-filled mouth (slobber and spit flying) and huge paw/hands with claws. Scary! If you’ve seen the Underworld movies, that’s what I envision. There are also mutants. Mutant werewolves were bitten, not birthed, as were their purebred superiors. Their exteriors are limited to that of a human or they can shift into a scary feral ‘mutant’ form. Purebreds and mutants have become mortal enemies over the years. I Kissed a Dog offers additional back-story on their differences and history.

And where did werewolves and vampires come from initially, you ask? Well, that’s easy! They are the descendents of fallen angels having sexy time with human women; becoming the evolved Nephilim of old.

I bet you wish you hadn’t asked the original question! Can you tell I get just a tad excited about the topic? I’ll stop. After all, there is more to discover in the books.

You said: “I started my career writing Christian fiction, spiritual suspense and spiritual warfare stories” – how far is from them the paranormal romance genre and what made you to change the „course”?
Another great and thought provoking question. Nothing canned about your queries and hopefully my answers.

I think I need to start off by clarifying that I continue to write Christian/Inspirational fiction, and, at some point, will have a nonfiction title released. My first book, Slaying the Shadows, was published by a smaller independent publisher back in 2003. I’d also completed and sold numerous magazine articles for the inspirational market, and was an author-contributor to several popular devotional anthologies. My primary mission has been to inspire, motivate, and be an example of change. I wanted to reflect that in my written work. However, unlike some readers/writers, I enjoy a wide (and I mean wide!) range of books, especially ones with paranormal or supernatural twists and turns, which led me to write a mainstream paranormal fantasy with romance. My Werewolves of the West series was intended for entertainment purposes, created to read, enjoy, and escape into. It is not particularly ‘soul’ searching material, whereas my Soul Defenders series clearly has a spiritual theme or message.

Looking back, I should have probably used a pseudonym to avoid confusion as some readers are not quite as open about transitioning between different genres; though many, like me (and maybe you), are. For the more diverse audience the shift between the two genres is fairly seamless.

In all my books readers will find:

1. Heart pumping action.
2. Mystery and suspense.
3. Good vs. Evil (with gray areas too!)
4. Love and blossoming romance in the midst of crisis situations.
5. A major “Who dunnit factor.”
6. Plenty of twists, turns, and subplots with secondary characters.

I hope this answered your question!

You write about "Good vs. Evil. Angels and Demons.” There is in your books a clean separation between them or lot of shadows? Are the shadows relevant for the plot?
Where do you come up with these awesome questions? I am so impressed! Really. I am. Blog Readers, I hope you’re as awed by your host as I am. Okay, I’ll stop my inner-applauding and answer the question.

The answer is yes and yes. Yes there is a sparation between good and evil, and, yes, there are a lot of shadowy areas as well. I don’t want to give too much away, but in my Soul Defender’s series, I have demons that long for Heaven, and one disheartend fiend who is trying to earn his way back by performing good deeds. Does he make it? You’ll just have to read the book to find out! In the Werewolves of the West series, we’re dealing with fallen angels for the most part, and they each have their own agenda, selfish agendas for sure. Shadows are very plot-revelent in my books with several characters. You might find yourself surprised by who is who and what is what.

There is a big difference between the covers of the series. How important is the cover for a book?
I think a cover is what initially draws a reader to a book. I know I’m always eyeballing the amazing covers I see. The market is so competitive and there are so many fantastic covers beckoning us to read, read, and more importantly, read this book. Your cover is the red carpet welcoming potential readers into the book’s pages.

My publisher decided to change “the look” of my series for book two, She Kissed a Vampire. What ties book one and two together is the color red. With two very unique covers, we had to find a way to promote them side-by-side as part of the same series. There’s plenty of blood in both stories, so red really works. Maybe down the road the first cover will change. I know the publisher wanted something that stood out from the pack. I believe crimson, blood-stained lips do the trick!

I Kissed a Dog it was your first paranormal romance you wrote. She Kissed a Vampire was published after two years after the first volume of the series. There are many changes in the way you wrote it? How a writer can learn from his own work?
She Kissed a Vampire was supposed to be released much sooner; unfortunately, I had a series of family crisis situations, financial setbacks (lost my day job of six years), health problems, and was dealing with my mom’s horrific decline into the world of dementia. It was one of those years. Needless to say, my priorities shifted. Did I mention I’m a single parent? So … stuff happened making the wait longer than we’d hoped for. I was lucky my publisher was so flexible.

The good news: Book two is better than book one. At least I think it is! Every book is a new opportunity learn, grow, and hone your skills. A writer should improve with time, not decline. At least that’s what I hope for. I believe book two picked up the pace and became a tighter, well-oiled machine. Less pages, but more action. In addition, I decided to do something different. Rather than one heroine and hero surrounded by secondary characters, I told the story from two equally important points of view, both written in first person.

Readers are treated to two connected stories running parallel to the other; yet they are intertwined and crisscross back and forth like a fine woven tapestry. We have Melanie (paranormal romance author) and Chloe (the animal mind reading heroine from book one) and their supernatural shenanigans at the heart of the story. They’ve been BFF’s since childhood and have some major issues to resolve, all while trying to stay alive, find love, and save the world from falling into the clutches of an assortment of paranormal players hell bent on the human race’s enslavement.

TOUR SCHEDULE
Melanie Larson
Back in my motel room, I paced like one of the caged cats down at the Wildlife Park. I was eager for some action, Kellen action, and I understood that my crushing desire wasn’t normal. Ordinary attractions didn’t cause a person to forget all else, even to the point of not worrying about a best friend on the brink of complete ruin. Typical romances didn’t lead to amnesia either. Not that I didn’t remember there was a supernatural world raging around me, but I just didn’t care. Knowing the truth seemed like something I’d always been aware of, not a day-old revelation. In fact, nothing about this attraction to the fae prince was normal.
As the time for our rendezvous drew closer, I could feel him in my mind, caressing my thoughts with an inhuman energy that sent jolts of erotic pleasure through me like an electrical current pulsing through a wire. I was somehow in tune to his presence; the feeling grew stronger as the minutes ticked by. It was as if he was signaling me, preparing me for his arrival. And like any good subject awaiting royalty, I was prepared to roll out the red carpet of my life for him to stroll down, and maybe, if I wasn’t careful, he’d stomp and wipe his muddy boots on it instead.
A teensy part of me warned how dangerous this magnificent male was to my health, and not just my heart health, but my overall wellbeing. His power unleashed would destroy me. Yet I was willing to risk everything to feel his hands on me.
I’d never been boy crazy growing up, or focused on sex as an adult. I’d been with one man, my former jerk of a husband. Our love life had been more than satisfying in the beginning, but as things went bad, so did our time in the bedroom. We stopped sharing a bed altogether, which only served to increase my insecurity. After all, he was finding fulfillment elsewhere. Fulfillment, he made clear in a multitude of ways, I could no longer provide. But now, with Kellen’s attention, I felt like a shy school girl who’d landed the big guy on campus’ attention, times a thousand. I was giddy with feelings and sensations I’d only written about in books, never once believing they could become a reality, especially for someone like me—plain old me.
The sudden sense of a door opening in my mind shocked my thoughts into submission.
You are beautiful, precious, worthy of love. There is no need for you to hide behind your human cosmetics, for your natural shine is what makes my heart beat for you, Melanie Larson.
I gasped as Kellen’s words found a home in my mind, soothing my fears, calming my anxious thoughts. How could I have doubted his intentions for even a moment? I was trying to sabotage an experience that would surely exceed any expectations.
Armed with renewed confidence, I silenced my inner critic and determined that I would enjoy the night, putting all notions of future love and long term relationships aside. This was my one night to be brazen, brave, and to feel beyond beautiful. I intended to embrace every moment. Tomorrow would come soon enough with its harsh realities.

 It always did.

About the author:
Like most authors, Carol Van Atta is no stranger to the written word. She penned a short novel at age 12 (somewhat frightening illustrations included, and lots of bunnies were involved), and had a creative writing piece published in her high school newspaper (about David Bowie's Diamond Dogs LP). Yes, she's an ex-80's chick.

Devouring books from numerous genres, Carol developed a deep thirst/hunger for more reading material, and could almost always be found with her nose in a book.

She has contributed to several popular inspirational anthologies and devotional books, and lives in the rainy wetland of Oregon with a terrifying teen (another in college) and a small zoo of animals. She is taking an undetermined hiatus away from inspirational writing to delve into her darker side. (Though you can check out her latest spiritual suspense novel, Soul Defenders). It is rumored that this genre-jumping occurred after Carol discovered too suspicious red marks on her neck, and experienced an unquenchable urge to howl at the moon.

EXCERPT

Sparks danced up into the night air as another section of the house burst into flames. Sirens blared in the distance. I sat with my head in my palm at the top of a tree looking down.

The wind picked up and the fire spread. Screams came from inside the house.

I tapped the side of my face as more sparks shot upward past my head. So beautiful were these little beams of light amongst such tragedy that was occurring before my very eyes. I wanted to reach out and touch the sparks, let them linger on my fingertips.

A tanker pulled into the driveway as a coughing female exited the home. An ambulance came next, its flashing lights spotlighting the woods next to the house. Paramedics jumped out of the vehicle and hurried toward the female.

The very way his body moved when he walked had made my chest tighten. I looked up and our eyes met. For an instance, he stopped moving, his stare burning into the very pit of my being. One of my wings almost flopped down because this creature had taken me by surprise, but I remained in control of myself.

I had run into creatures of the dark before. We merely ignored one another’s presence and kept going about what it was we were supposed to do. This time had been different. This creature’s magnetic force drew me in.

He was unlike any demonic form I had even known to exist. He was tall, muscular with long, dark hair … almost man-like. His eyes were mesmerizing. His sly smile drew me in even more.

A loud explosion echoed into the darkness followed by an enormous cloud of gray smoke. The female cried out as firemen kicked down the side door of the house and entered.

More firemen clamped their hands down upon a huge hose as the water was turned on and squirted upward and then down trying to quiet the flames. The roof of the house crackled from the intensity of the fire.

A male child was tossed down from one of the upstairs windows and into the arms of a fireman standing below. His mother rushed over to him and swooped him up in her arms as the paramedics pried the coughing child from the grips of the hysterical mother and took him to their vehicle to examine him.

He walked over to me, unusually close, the heat from his skin leaping onto mine. He held up his open palm. As if entranced, I placed my hand upon his and our fingers laced together. Suddenly the darkness of his eyes were illuminated with swirls of hypnotic colors circling each other in the very middle where his pupils should be.

I knew I shouldn’t be here, shouldn’t be touching this sinful creature before me, but I couldn’t stop. His touch was hot with a passion I had never known before, yet so familiar. I was caught in a trap that I never wanted to get out of.

His other hand dug into the back of my hair and jerked my head back, his breath hot on my neck, his eyes peering into mine.

“How many more, ma’am?” a fireman shouted out above the sirens.

The female just stood there in front of the smoldering shelter before her, both hands covering her face, ashen filled tears falling from the edge of her jaw.

“Ma’am!” the fireman hollered out. “Who else are you missing?”

The wind changed directions. I looked up to see another angel passing by carrying the breeze along with her.  She raised her hand ever so slightly to wave. I nodded at her.

The fireman covered his nostrils with the inside of his arm as the wind carried the sultry smoke toward him.

The female seemed unaffected by the smoke. She just kept staring at that front door, her apprehension more of a focus now as she waited. “Two,” she finally replied.

“Did she say two?” another guy asked.

“Two?” he asked her again to confirm.

Never looking her way, she nodded. “My husband, he went back in for our oldest son.”

“Who are you?” I whispered, my chest heaving up and down from his firm grasp on my hair. My anger flared. I should kill him for putting his hands on me like that, but it felt so good.

He narrowed his eyes at me for a moment before answering, “Draco.”

Draco.

He released me as I stood up straight facing him. I knew who this strange creature was. I had heard about him on my travels. He was a solider of the dark, his strength witnesses marveled at. Most of the soldiers of the dark were cowards who slithered here and there with little, if any, common sense about their purpose or duty at hand. It was said that this Draco’s loyalty surpassed all others. But there was one other tidbit I had heard that was even more unusual. Those who worked with him, who were on the same side, seemed to like him. It was a concept unheard of for the dark side. Everyone was your enemy and everyone hated each other.

“And you are?” he asked.

If I said my name, he’d know who I was as well, and he’d run away. My intrigue was far too deep to have him disappear just yet.

“It doesn’t matter, does it?” I said.

He smirked, a dimple forming in the side of his cheek as he did so.

What the heck was wrong with me? I wanted to run my fingers over his lips. I should’ve reigned in those thoughts faster! I had urged myself to try to focus on what was happening around me, not to look at him.

Part of the roof began to sink until finally caving in with a horrific, crushing noise as it broke bits and pieces of the house that had stood underneath. This caused another flame to appear in a new section, the orange and blue colors lapping up all the oxygen around them.

The female was still standing in front of the door. I looked at my fingernail. A male child cried out from the door of the ambulance, the noise terrifying the poor thing.

“Get Jeff out of there!” a fireman shouted as he fumbled to remove his walkie-talkie from his belt. He pushed a button down on the side of the small device. “Jeff, can you hear me? Jeff, are you okay? Jeff, get out! Get out of there now!”

Another siren echoed in the distance attached to another tanker. I frowned and looked up at the stars dotting the skyline. I felt my mind drifting to him again.

He took a step closer to me again. I backed up. Amusement danced in those eyes of his. He reached out again, I moved back another step.

“Surely, you’re not afraid of me?”

Forbidden was more like the term that came to mind. We weren’t to interact with creatures of the dark, and likewise, they with us.

I knew I should reveal to him my name, but I didn’t want to. I wasn’t thinking clearly. My head seemed to be filled with fog. I told myself to pull it together. I was a warrior angel, not some addle minded girl.

I wondered why he didn’t at least take me as a creature of the light. Couldn’t he sense the light? Perhaps it was my enormous wings the color of coal tucked in securely to my back. They always gave me the appearance of being a darker shade than the other angels. I could only make the assumption that this Draco took me as one of his own.

His hands grabbed onto my waist and pulled me forward into his chest.

“Draco … no,” I whispered, but in my head I was saying YES.

“Say it again,” he pleaded, his lips gliding across the top of my forehead as he spoke.

The energy I felt within me being next to him was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. It engulfed every inch of me.

“Say what?” I asked, completely aware of how close our faces were.

He chuckled, the noise radiating into his chest that I now realized I had both of my hands pressed against.

“My name.”

I looked up at his face, his square jaw, and his stormy eyes. My lips parted and with a smirk I said, “No.”

A growling noise escaped from his throat. He narrowed his eyes, his hands around my waist pressing me tighter into his body.

“You dare defy me?” he whispered.

I stared back with my left eyebrow arched, not allowing my eyes to turn away from him so he knew his intimidation couldn’t make me cower.

“You’re not afraid?” He inspected every inch of my face as if memorizing each feature.

My body tingled from the overwhelming emotions. I had never felt this strange before. There was an ache in the pit of my stomach and a comfort in staring in this dark creature’s eyes as if he had put me under some sort of spell.

I reached up and let my fingertip trace the edge of his bottom lip. I grinned.

The female gasped as she saw the front door broken apart from the inside. Smoke poured out from the enflamed house, its beams and foundation creaking on the brink of crumpling completely down.

Out came the fireman, a small child in his arms. She rushed to him. The firefighter handed him over and then fell to one knee on the ground.

The medics came to attend to the male child, his face covered in soot, his dark eyes huge at the scene before him.

“It’s okay, ma’am!” the medic yelled out. “We got him! He needs oxygen!”

The medic had to practically pull the child out of his mother’s arms. As he did, she drew her fingers into her mouth, her moist eyes returning to the fireman who still was kneeling down.

“Jeff, you okay?” another fireman asked him. He tried to help him up by putting his arm underneath him, but the man they called Jeff swatted him away.

“No, I got to go back in.”

“What? You can’t! That whole thing is ready to fall.”

Jeff stood up then and put his mask back on. “He was right behind me. He’s got to be right there.” His eyes met the female’s as he headed back to the front door.

Draco withdrew from my touch for a moment, his eyes turning from anger to astonishment.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

The corners of my mouth lifted upward in a small smile. “You feel it, too, don’t you?”

I could feel his heart hammering away in his chest, a vein protruding from his neck where a scar lay.

“I …” he mumbled, searching my eyes for an explanation for this intensity.

“You can’t let go of me, can you?” I asked, my hand running through the back of his black hair.

For a few moments more he studied me, but this time he didn’t pull away from my touch. He leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. As if I didn’t think the emotions could grow any stronger. My head was spinning in a thousand different directions. This was wrong but felt so right. He kissed me gently, and then I kissed back harder as if trying to melt into him but impossible to get any closer than we already were. My entire body felt alive, every nerve ending inflamed, the heat coursing through my veins. I felt so consumed by Draco. I couldn’t breathe, and I loved every second of it.

A stinging pain etched its way to a spot near where my wing attached to my back. I pulled back from Draco quickly, my hand releasing hold on him and trying to find the newly formed wound.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his eyes on me, his arms still extended as I backed further away, the pain feeling as if one part of my skin was on fire.

It started to ease a little, but I couldn’t see what had happened to me. I felt exhilarated, exhausted and guilty all at the same time.

“Are you okay?”

Was he concerned for me? I watched him take a few steps toward me, his large, strong body moving in that rhythmic and enticing way.

“I … think so. Something’s hurting on my back,” I quickly explained.

His eyebrows lowered. He was concerned. A creature of the dark didn’t care about anything or anyone but themselves. He was a walking contradiction.

“Let me see,” he said, trying to look behind me.

Afraid he’d see my wings, I turned so I was facing him again. “I’m fine,” I snapped.

His eyes grew large, something stewing within them again as if trying to read my thoughts.

“Who are you?” he asked, the distance between us minimal, his hands up as if ready to dive back into what we had just been doing in an instant, but he was being careful. He didn’t want me to run away which I felt on the verge of.

“I can’t tell you,” I said, my voice crackling under the desire to leap back into his arms, but the burning still lingering on my back.

“Okay.” He lowered his hands. “What are you?”

I felt a tremendous pull on my heart. I took a step closer to Draco. His hand automatically weaved its way into mine.

“Whatever you are,” he continued. “You’re beautiful, and I’m drawn to you in a way I can’t even explain.”

I looked from his eyes to his lips, feeling the exact same way.

He pulled me close again, his lips gliding across mine.

I jumped back, the same unknown burning sensation in my back again.

He looked confused.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “Something’s wrong.”

“What could possibly be wrong?” he asked, his face one of utter rejection.

My heart was slamming against my ribs. The burning subsided slightly again the farther away I was from him. I took a few more steps backward. It felt even better. I wished I could see behind me to know what was going on, where this pain had erupted from.

“I have to go,” I told him.

He raised his arm up as if trying to hang on. “Please, no. Don’t leave yet. I don’t even know who you are …”

“It doesn’t matter,” I called out putting more distance between us so that I couldn’t see the twisted emotions in his eyes any longer. “This can’t happen again, won’t happen again.”

With that, I turned and ran until completely out of Draco’s sight, at which time I spread my wings and launched into the sky.
