a mythopoeic land of hidden horrors and guiding spirits... Goddess of the Wild Thing by Paul DeBlassie III

Get ready because these characters will take you on some twist and turns and surprise you that's for sure. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going to happen next. [...]
I liked his style of writing and one I got into it I was drawn in till the very end. - Dawn D., Goodreads

Description:

Winner of the Independent Press Award and the NYC Big Book Award for Visionary Fiction!

Eve Sanchez, a scholar of esoteric studies, is driven into unreal dimensions of horror and hope as she encounters a seductive and frightening man, criminal lawyer Sam Shear.

Sam introduces Eve to a supernatural world in which the wicked powers of a surrogate mother’s twisted affection threaten love and life. Struggling to sort through right from wrong, frightened yet determined, Eve nears despair.

Goddess of the Wild Thing reveals the dramatic tale of one woman’s spiritual journey where metaphysical happenings, unexpected turns of fate, and unseen forces impact her ability to love and be loved.

In the magical realm of Aztlan del Sur, a mythopoeic land of hidden horrors and guiding spirits, Eve, with three friends and a wise old woman, is caught in an age-old struggle about love—whether bad love is better than no love— and discovers that love is a wild thing.

I could picture clearly the fantastical sense of place . A must-read magical tale. ~ Luna Saint Claire, author of The Sleeping Serpent

GUEST POST
Science fiction-fantasy... today

Science fiction-fantasy has jettisoned forward in recent years to form an exciting and stimulating phantasmagoric amalgam. Good literature shifts, changes, and matures. Now sci-fi/fantasy offers the discriminating reader the benefit of traditional sci-fi (stories about future scientific or technological advances and social and environmental changes) urban fantasy, steampunk, visionary fiction, occult thrillers, and metaphysical horror narratives. Sci-fi/fantasy readers delve into realms of heightened personal and social transformation, and mind-bending alterations in consciousness.

These trends are purposefully provocative, cortical neurons and mental consciousness stimulated to beyond the tried and true. Brains and psyches are capable of continued growth and development over a lifespan, good literature energizing that process. Genre stories such as sci-fi/fantasy, if inspired, are written in a unique idiom. They open fascinating worlds to everyday educated folks. As writers, our intent is to communicate. So, no matter the level of formal education, an ardent reader should be able to pick up our book and take their time, absorb, learn, and enjoy.

Good literature stands the test of time in terms of quality, accessibility, and the power to touch the human soul. Books from one-hundred, twenty, or ten years ago draw the passionate reader into new dimensions of experience and expand the mind — the objective of all passionate sci-fi/fantasy writers.

How long did it take you to write your book?

Paul DeBlassie III, Ph.D./SoulCare said...

Bernie ~ Goddess of the Wild Thing took about two years. My first book, The Unholy, took four. I write then rewrite dozens of times then onto at least three rounds of professional edits. The writing is in the rewriting (and editing) as Ray Carver said. Thanks for the question - hope you get a chance to give Goddess a read!

Christina, Tetewa, and James - I know for sure I was on the edge of my seat while writing Goddess of the Wild Thing! The cover, when I first saw it blew me away, the sense of my breath stopping for a microsecond, and I knew it was right. I hope you all go in for the giveaway and, if you get a chance, give GWT a read!

Which character changed the most from your first to final draft?

Paul DeBlassie III, Ph.D./SoulCare said...

Bernie - definitely the protagonist, Eve. She's a scholar of esoterica who needs to find her way from head to heart. It's a rather treacherous, frightening journey!

Paul DeBlassie III, Ph.D./SoulCare said...

Bernie - I also just caught your other question about the movie - only if it felt right, my dreams said it was good to go, and then things fell into place - so, it just depends. I'm into the written word, reading and writing. Films as well - if they work :)
