Excerpt
Be whatever we can be.
A year later I was preparing for the career selection exams when my sister Irma came to visit me. She had been writing to me once a week for three years. I think I had responded once but she sent it back saying she couldn't read what I had written. That made me feel absolutely great, can't even communicate with family.
"What have you been doing with yourself Irma?"
"I've been going to Space service prep school because mom wants me to enter the service. I know you don't agree with the track they put you on so I brought you a name and a credit chip."
"What's the name for Irma? I've got one already, Felix, and it hasn't done anything for me."
She stopped and looked me straight in the eyes. "Felix, I really have trouble knowing when you are joking. The name is for a guy who hacks exam scores so that you can get into something better and the credit chip is untraceable so that you can pay him. Do you understand?"
My temper told me that I had just been insulted so I raised my hand and tried to strike her. She was really fast as she clamped my hand and twisted just enough to snap a ligament in it. "I love you as a brother but you are not going to get the chance to hurt me. Use what I've given you and come see me when you get settled, temper too. Promise it."
I cradled my wounded wrist and sulked. "All right, I promise. I wasn't joking by the way. I thought you did want me to take another name."
Irma broke into tears and hugged me. "We really need to talk more. I'll be back in a month. Be good will you?"
I just looked at her with my mouth open for a few moments. "I will, when I can figure out what that means. Good bye."
