We all wear various masks for different situations. - Mask: Shadow (Masks) by Joseph VanBuren

"Mask: Shadow lives up to its name, giving you shadows and silhouettes of meaning. Everything is a conspiracy and everyone is out to get you. I can't wait for the other books and sound tracks to drop and fill out these shadows!" - Keifer, Goodreads

We all wear various masks for different situations. It’s how we adapt and react to life. Wear a mask for too long, however, and it becomes difficult to remove. Especially if that mask has been forced upon you…

Sykophunk Productions presents Mask: Shadow by Joseph VanBuren. Through twisted poetry and dark ambient soundscapes, the tale of a tortured soul unfolds.

In the aftermath of strange psychiatric and biogenetic experiments, our narrator questions reality, laments the loss of truth, and perhaps even reveals apocalyptic prophecies.

This is the first in a trilogy of poetry chapbooks with accompanying soundtracks. The soundtrack instruMental albums can also be found on Amazon.

Shadow I

This mask,
my other skin,
fits like a glove.
Looks like the leather
of another,
but it is mine.
I was born into it.
Incubated in hangover,
gifted with angry genes,
shat out into slums,
tendered by the beatings of judgements
and molded by punishment

only found in solitude.
Spending quality time
by myself but not
with myself.
The infinite hum of loneliness.
The rumbling rage of rejection.
In the nebulous clouds of neglect
the shadow was formed,
the mask first worn.

Mad and crazy are merely colloquial.
They don’t use those words any more,
but euphemisms are shrouds and not graves.
He is a product of his tortured past
they will say
before they torture me presently.
I refuse
to reject this mask
the way the world has rejected me.
