Guest Post and Giveaway: The Dark King (Fae Trilogy) by C.J. Abedi

Description:

Darkness descends over Roanoke Island in the sequel to the young adult bestseller, FAE.

Devilyn Reilly has crossed over to the sinister world of The Dark Fae, reigning over the realm as its King. He is to fulfill a prophecy--to unite the Light and Dark Fae once and for all, but those who love him now fear that he will never be the same again, that he can no longer be trusted, that every trace of the Light he once had is gone forever.

Caroline Ellis, the final heir of the Light Fae, must learn to survive without the protection of her one true love. She must come to embrace her own strength to evade those in the Dark court who seek her destruction—for the power is within Caroline to use Light to change Fate itself...

Caroline and Devilyn’s chemistry is undeniable. Their destiny together inevitable if only they have the will to overcome The Darkness and The Fates.

THE DARK KING, the second installment of the stunning Fae trilogy propels readers into the mystical and magical world of the Light and Dark Fae, where star-crossed love ignites a battle between two powerful kingdoms, one that can consume everything that stands in its path.

GUEST POST
WRITING SEQUEL

When we began our journey with FAE we always knew that the story of Devilyn and Caroline would be broken into three books. In our minds it was always a trilogy. There was a definitive path we had chosen for our star-crossed lovers and there were many obstacles they needed to overcome. Yet after finished FAE Book 1 and received such a great response from readers it really fueled our passion and helped us immediately dive into the world of The Dark King, thus making the whole process really enjoyable.

Given the underlying spirit of The Dark Fae and all of these elements, it was relatively easy to fall back into the world and write this book. Having said that, we both knew that this time would also be a lot different because we had to introduce more of the mythology of the Tuatha de Danann and we wanted to add a lot more magic and elements from the FAE world. We wanted our readers to see all of the reasons Devilyn chose the kingdom of the Dark, while getting a peak at the the kingdom Caroline was destined to rule. While asking ourselves if those two worlds are one in the same.

As with any story, we think it’s important to sit down and write an outline and given that there were so many mythological elements to The Dark King, we also did a lot of research. Although we took a lot of creative liberties with many of the characters and settings, but we also feel that there is a balance there that our readers will enjoy. Our process was very similar to writing FAE, where one of us would write a chapter and the other would go over it and we would bounce it back and forth until it felt just right.

What’s not easy about writing a sequel is the range of emotions that run through your head when you start to tackle the project. You want something to be as good, if not better, than the first. You want the response to continue to be positive and you want to leave the readers dying for more. So there were a lot of times we threw out what we did and started over because we wanted to stay true to the story and to our fans. We read every single review and comment and took it all to heart and poured our soul into The Dark King.

Balancing being sisters and writing partners for the Fae Trilogy is also a juggling act. On the one hand, we have the ease of being family to say whatever we want and voice our opinion. On the other, we are partners and have to temper emotions to do what’s right for the series, which can be challenging when you have such shorthand that you want to fight for your way. Every decision we made on Book 2, The Dark King, directly effects Book 3 (title will be revealed soon) so we had to be very careful with our choices. It’s a domino effect and it becomes even trickier when the plot thickens and you bring elements of magic into the mix.

For both of us this has been such an emotional journey because we are really married to these characters. They have lived in our minds now for a couple of years. With The Dark King we also had to examine the darkness in us all and the notion that light has the ability to lead the way. In The Dark King, Devilyn really embraces what and who he believes he should ultimately be and by doing so turns his back on love. This in and of itself has so many ramifications, and given that we are champions of love we felt that this decision he made was crushing because we love Caroline so much.

Caroline is our girl! She’s so strong, smart, determined and also such a lovely character. Everyone’s really rooting for her. And this time she has so many paths before her and we ask the question of whether it’s destiny that pushes you down one path or another or if you have the ability to find your own way in life.

Ultimately it really was a magical process and we both definitely learned a lot as writers and sisters and in the end we’re pretty sure that the fans will be happy. We’re both so excited that the time is finally here and everyone gets to see where Devilyn and Caroline left off and what’s happening in their lives now. It’s a whole new world in Manteo.

We hope everyone enjoys the book as much as we enjoyed writing it.
