Guest Post and Giveaway: Fledgling (The Dragonrider Chronicles) by Nicole Conway

Published: April 29th, 2014

Description:

Can one boy stand between two kingdoms at war?

Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels his future is hopeless, until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him in Blybrig Academy—a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal. But Jaevid’s case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a peculiar interest in Jaevid’s future.

While struggling through the rigorous physical demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king’s private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder riders are willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his instructor.

Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now be put to the ultimate test.

GUEST POST
Heroes And Their Dragons

Hello! Thank you for having me! I’m excited to talk about Fledgling—especially about Jaevid, Felix, and their dragons.

Jaevid’s connection with his dragon, Mavrik, is unique. For years, dragonriders have been treating their mounts like horses to be bred and kept like livestock, without giving them any real say in the matter. But Mavrik’s relationship with his rider is different. He chose Jaevid voluntarily. Why? Well, without giving too much away from what’s to come in the rest of series, the answer is because Jaevid asked him to.

When they first meet, they are both prisoners in some capacity, facing a grim future. Jaevid is trapped because of his race, looking forward to nothing but a life of misery. Mavrik is trapped, as well. He was captured in the wild, and because he refuses to choose a rider, is now looking at a life being treated like cattle. Destiny brought them together, and both characters recognize that. It’s no surprise that they chose to work together, and it makes their bond much deeper. They are mutually able to call one another not only a savior, but a trusted friend.

The bond between Felix and Nova is much different, and it began in the opposite way. Felix is the son of a very powerful duke. There’s not much he can’t afford. He bought Nova as a hatchling. As a large, powerful female, she was very resistant to submitting to the whims of a human. But Felix’s approach wasn’t one of physical force. Sure, he’s a strong guy, but his claim to fame is knowing how to win his way into any female’s heart. Not even Nova could resist his charms. He earned her trust, and though their connection isn’t as deep as Jaevid and Mavrik’s, the two definitely share a unique bond.

When we enter the world of dragonriders at the beginning of Fledgling, most dragonriders don’t have much of a cooperative relationship with them. They work together in the air during battle, but beyond that, they are just master and beast. That’s what makes Jaevid’s situation—being chosen by a dragon—such a shock to them. It’s been a long time since the dragonriders of Maldobar have looked to their origins, but Jaevid’s presence in their midst leaves them no choice. Change is in the air, and Fledgling is only the beginning!
