I am not a slut, although I’ve been called one often enough. Yeah, I spent three months screwing one of my college professors, but I was crazy about the guy. Then he broke up with me.
I am not a bitch, although people like to say I am. I kept our relationship secret. I’m not responsible for telling the university administrators about it, but a lot of students still blame me for getting their favorite professor fired.
I am not a drama queen, although everyone thinks I am now. When I got a few nasty messages, I just deleted them. When I got the threat, I assumed it was someone being stupid. I still think that’s all it was. My parents worry, though, so they hired me a bodyguard. Now Jack follows me around, intimidating everyone who approaches me and looking obnoxiously hot.
This is what I am. I’m Chloe. I’m a twenty-year-old art history major. Kind of shy, although I pretend not to be. Stubborn enough to stay here for my senior year, even though everyone hates me.
And I’m stuck with Jack.
He calls me “Princess,” but I’m not a princess either.
Author's Favorite Quotes from Knowing Jack
by Rachel Curtis
“Why do you have naked babies on your underwear?” – Jack
Rachel: This is from the first chapter, and Jack, her bodyguard, has just burst into Chloe’s room when he hears a crash. She’s wearing her favorite Sistine Chapel underwear, and I just love Jack’s sense of humor and also that he can’t take his eyes off of Chloe’s body.
“And I’ve got to tell you, there are a lot of lies out there in the world—books and movies and songs and stories that keep telling us that sex creates intimacy, connection, affection. Love.
It doesn’t create any of those things. It just masquerades as them. And all you’re left with is a heavy clenching in your gut that reminds you, over and over again, that you played the part but still don’t have what you really want.” – Chloe
Rachel: I really like this bit of reflection on Chloe’s part, after she’s first had sex with Jack. I think it really embodies her feelings and is really true to a lot experience.
“The person who makes you cry shouldn’t get to see you cry. That should be a rule.” – Chloe
Rachel: I completely agree with Chloe on this one. It should definitely be a rule!
“No one gets to hurt you and stay standing. Not in this world. Not while I’m alive.” – Jack
Rachel: This quote is totally Jack. I love how much it says about Jack’s feelings for Chloe’s and his protective nature.
“I knew there would be consequences to giving in. I knew it, princess. You’re just not the kind of girl a guy can be with without it changing his whole world.” – Jack
Rachel: This is from near the end of the book, and I think this really shows how much Jack loves Chloe. I just love how honest and transparent he is about how much he adores her.
