Author's Guest Post

While promoting The Impaler’s Revenge, I was invited by Mythical Books to write a guest post about fantasy related themes, but you see, my novella is not your typical fantasy book. It starts from the premises that vampires actually exist and live among us, but there it deviates from the current trends. In this alternate reality in which vampires are an everyday occurrence, there’s one country who still remembers the old days, when there was none, and keeps fighting against them. Romania, with its pandurs and Little Council, has managed to isolate itself from the rest of the world and keeps its population safe by not allowing any vampire to cross the Romanian border for centuries.

In this scenario, the vampires are not your friends, they’re the enemy. Or at least, this is what Liana Cantacuzino has been told her entire life. Descendent of one of the oldest noble families and member of the Little Council, Liana is committed to her duty, though that isn’t hard to do when you don’t have an imminent threat around. The situation changes when a vampire is brought in, and not just any vampire but a thousand year old one, and therefore one of the oldest and strongest still alive. Imagine Liana’s internal drama when she’s appointed Maximilien Hess’ chaperone.

For those of you expecting a ‘girl meets vampire and falls madly in love’ scenario, I’m sorry to disappoint you. This isn’t a paranormal romance story, this is a survival story. Oh, don’t worry, there is a secondary romantic plot like you’ll find in most of my stories, but it’s not the main reason that drives the plot forward. Liana has to keep Max alive for the time being, all the while trying to figure out why he’s been brought in in the first place and why all the secrecy. She’s not alone in this, she has some trustful friends whose help she can count on, but in the end there are some tough decision to be made that are hers alone.

While in the process of editing The Impaler’s Revenge, one of my editors asked me if I considered my novella to belong to the fantasy or sci fi genre. Well, here’s the thing… aside from the vampires’ presence, there are no other fantasy elements, and even the vampires are just some physically enhanced humans who happen to need blood to sustain themselves. They have no problem with sunlight, mirrors, crosses and all of the other classical symbols. As for the sci fi elements, the pandurs still use yatagans instead of stakes, and there’s some blood work mentioned, but that’s about it. So I think gritty realism fits my story better.

I hope this helps you decide whether this book for you or not, and I thank Mythical Books for giving me the chance to explain things a little more than you can find in a book description. I do hope you will all enjoy The Impaler’s Revenge.

În cadrul campaniei de promovare pentru „The Impaler’s Revenge”, am fost invitată de Mythical Books să scriu câteva cuvinte despre experienţa mea cu genul fantasy, dar vedeţi voi, novela mea nu este o carte fantasy tipică. Porneşte de la premisa că vampirii există şi trăiesc printre noi, însă în continuare deviază de la trendurile curente. În această realitate alternativă în care vampirii sunt nişte creaturi obişnuite, există o ţară care păstrează vie memoria timpurilor îndepărtate, când aceştia nu existau, şi continuă lupta împotriva lor. Cu ajutorul pandurilor şi a Micului Divan, România a reuşit să se izoleze de restul lumii şi să îşi păstreze populaţia în siguranţă prin închiderea graniţelor în faţa vampirilor timp de mai multe secole.

În acest scenariu, vampirii nu îţi sunt prieteni. Ei reprezintă inamicul sau cel puţin asta a fost învăţată Liana Cantacuzino să creadă toată viaţa. Descendentă a uneia dintre vechile familii boiereşti şi membră a Micului Divan, Liana este dedicată muncii ei, deşi acesta nu este un lucru greu de realizat când nu există o ameninţare iminentă. Situaţia se schimbă odată cu aducerea unui vampir în ţară şi nu orice vampir, ci unul în vârstă de o mie de ani şi prin urmare unul dintre cei mai bătrâni şi mai puternici aflaţi încă în viaţă. Imaginaţi-vă drama Lianei, când îi este dat în grijă Maximilien Hess.

Pentru cei care se aşteaptă la o continuare de genul “fata întâlneşte un vampir şi se îndrăgosteşte nebuneşte de el” îmi pare rău că vă dezamăgesc. Aceasta nu este o poveste de dragoste paranormală, este o poveste despre supravieţuire. Nu vă faceţi griji, există şi un fir narativ romantic, secundar, ca mai în toate poveştile mele, dar nu este cel care pune lucrurile în mişcare. Liana trebuie să-l ţină pe Max în viaţă, în tot acest timp încercând să afle de ce a fost adus în ţară şi ce secret ascunde. Nu este singura implicată, se poate baza pe ajutorul unor prieteni credincioşi, însă în final, deciziile dificile îi rămân ei de luat.

În timp ce mă aflam în faza de editare a nuvelei, unul dintre editori m-a întrebat dacă eram de părere că se încadrează în genul fantasy sau science fiction. Mi-a dat de gândit, pentru că în afară de vampiri nu apar alte elemente fantasy, iar vampirii mei sunt tot un fel de oameni, mai puternici şi care au nevoie de sânge pe post de hrană. N-au probleme cu soarele, oglinzile, crucile şi alte simboluri clasice. Cât despre elementele ştiinţifico-fantastice, pandurii încă se mai folosesc de iatagane în loc de ţepuşe şi nişte experimente asupra compoziţiei sângelui sunt menţionate, dar cam asta e tot. De aceea cred că novela s-ar încadra mai bine într-un curent realist.

Sper că aceste lămuriri v-au trezit interesul şi mulţumesc echipei Mythical Books pentru această ocazie de a da puţin mai multe detalii decât se pot găsi în descrierea unei cărţi. De asemenea sper că o să vă placă The Impaler’s Revenge.
