Începându-și însemnările în, de acum, abominabilul sat Noul Dachang din Federația Unită a Chinei, unde se pare a fi fost originea epidemiei cu Pacientul Zero în vârstă de 12 ani, din pădurile fără de nume din nord unde o grămadă de indivizi și-au căutat un groaznic şi temporar refugiu în frig, până în Statele Unite ale Africii de Sud unde planul Redeker a adus speranță pentru umanitate în schimbul unui preț uriaș și până la reduta din vest a Munților Stâncoși unde valul Nord American a fost stăvilit în sfârşit, această cronică neprețuită oglindește amplitudinea și durata Războiului Zombie.

Mai mult decât orice, cartea te prinde cu dimensiunea umană a acestui eveniment epocal. Înfruntarea acestor întâlniri personale, deseori brutale şi intense, necesită un grad ridicat de curaj din partea cititorului, dar efortul este incalculabil deoarece, așa cum spunea Brooks în introducerea sa: „Prin excluderea factorului uman, nu riscăm cumva să ne detașăm personal de faptele istorice ceea ce, ferească Domnul, ne poate conduce la repetarea într-o zi a ceea ce s-a întâmplat azi?
