Excerpt Protector of the Flame (Kindred Chronicles #2) by Isis Rushdan

Description:

"In their bleakest hour, the price of redemption could be the death of their love. "

"Kindred Chronicles, Book 2"

Before Serenity and Cyrus can embark on a romantic honeymoon, one of their gifts from an immortal comes to life and unleashes a devastating series of events that forces them to make an unthinkable sacrifice. To undo the evil of dark magic, Serenity must travel to the immortals' hold in Iceland. Alone.

Her journey leads to an island shrouded in mystery, where secrets from her past come to light...and she forms an inexplicable connection with a handsome, tempting healer who may pose the greatest risk of all.

Cyrus comes close to unraveling without his mate, but refuses to let honor or duty keep them apart, even if it means the bloodshed of his own kinsmen.

As the Great Council prepares to convene to determine their fate, friends become enemies, enemies become allies, and soul mates are pushed right to the edge-where love and faith is their only hope of survival.

Warning: Contains soul mates put through the grinder, dark magic drama that will leave you reeling, angry sex that crumbles concrete, an alpha hero pushed over the edge, and a roller coaster full of twists.

GUEST POST
5 Things You Didn’t Know About Protector of the flame
Thank you, Mrs Rushdan
You won’t find any vampires, werewolves or fae on a single page. I created a supernatural species called Kindred for this series. Some readers have described them as part superhero, part angel. Many have commented that they enjoyed seeing something fresh and unique in the paranormal genre.

The contemporary setting for most of the book is quite different from Kindred of the Fallen. The first book took place in Manhattan and Valhalla, New York. Protector of the Flame picks up where the first book left off at the estate in Valhalla. Then I whisk readers around the world. Finally, I take you inside the heart of Cyrus’s House, clan Herut and to a mysterious island where all the rules change.

The conflict, tension and of course heat between a couple doesn’t magically stop simply because they get married. If you’re married, I’m sure you remember the first year. It can be killer for some couples and is definitely one of the hardest. Due to the unique circumstances of redemption for their entire species dependent on Serenity and Cyrus, they must contend with many different factors which keep their happily-ever-after out of reach. It also sparks some conflict in the bedroom.

Just because you find your soul-mate doesn’t mean you don’t notice others. Kindred are in general extremely talented and not hard on the eyes. Once separated from his spouse, Cyrus finds himself back at House Herut, where he is idolized by most and confronted with temptation. Serenity grew up around humans and experienced real desire for the first time when she met Cyrus. While apart from her mate, she encounters one male who rattles her to the core. Of course there are a few twists to complicate matters.

Love can be a powerful weapon. If you love someone more than yourself, you’re willing to sacrifice and do anything to save them, even take great leaps of faith when you’re outnumbered, completely surrounded and the odds of survival are pretty freaking low. Sometimes loving so deeply can be the weapon that saves you. At least let’s hope so for Cyrus and Serenity.

It was great to be here. Thank you for having me today!

EXCERPT:

The bedroom door burst open. Cyrus rushed in, eyes wide almost crazed, raven hair tousled. “Take off the necklace from the immortal witch.” His voice had a hard, frightening edge.

“Why?” She reached for her neck. When she thought she had the chain, it slipped between her fingers.

A horrified gasp clipped the quiet tension of the room as Talus jumped backward, tripping on the sofa. Serenity’s heart stuttered. The necklace slid through her fingers again.

A grim expression wrenched Cyrus’s face. Jagged bolts of terror ripped through their merged energy stream.

“What’s wrong?” She swallowed the acrid taste of panic filling her mouth.

Cyrus clasped her shoulders. “We tried to remove the glodems.” He spoke steadily, drawing out the words when she simply needed him to spit it out. “None of us can lift or break them. They won’t budge.”

“What does that have to do with me or the necklace?” She grasped for the chain once more, her fingers desperately searching for it.

“Serenity,” he said in a tone so controlled strain leaked through, “when you touch the necklace…it crawls into your skin and becomes part of your flesh.”

One glance at the petrified look on Talus’s face confirmed the impossible words to be true.

Her blood curdled. She broke free from Cyrus and raced to the bathroom. Her pulse hammered in her head. Her thoughts spun into a terrifying tangle.

In the mirror, she could see the gold chain and the amulet, Aset’s colorful wings cradling a stone wrapped in golden thread. The gift from the immortal rested against her breastbone, warm on her skin as any other piece of jewelry would.

Slowly, she reached for the chain. A harsh shiver took hold as her fingers drew closer, eyes locked on the charm.

An inch from the necklace her hand trembled. She skimmed the amulet with a fingertip, temples pounding, holding her breath. As she went to hook a finger on the chain, the necklace wormed into her skin—a slithering gold reptile burying itself inside of her. The wings of the pendant flapped wildly, then hooked into her chest and the center stone melded with her sternum.

About the author:
I'm the author of the paranormal romance KINDRED OF THE FALLEN, the first novel in the Kindred Chronicles. I love creating dark tales of love often laced with mythology. When possible, I reward my flawed characters for the hell I put them through with a happy ending.

Before following my bliss as a writer, I served as a U.S. Air Force Intelligence Officer. Wanderlust has taken me to Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, throughout Europe, and has kept me moving every three years. Fortunately, I’m blessed with a husband who shares my passion for travel, movies, and fantastic food.

I currently live in Florida with my husband, son and spoiled canine kiddies.
