My Inspiration for the Anderson Brothers Series
I started getting into the New Adult genre back in 2013, when the genre was still in its infant stages in the publishing industry. Books like Easy by Tammara Webber and Flat Out Love by Jessica Park had long since paved the way to this fresh new voice in the literary community. The first book I picked up was A Moment by Marie Hall. From that day on, I was hooked. Now, I will admit, there were many NA books out there that I didn’t care for, but many more diamonds that I couldn’t wait to read. I guess you could call me a picky reader, but aren’t we all?
I soon got to the point where I was exhausting my options, finding books with the same type of stories, same types of characters, etc. While there’s nothing wrong with that, I wanted something more. Something a little different.
I’m a full-fledged tomboy, having grown up with two older brothers and living on a street where there were virtually no one but boys to play with. So naturally, as a reader, I would love to read about someone like me. But there was the problem. The majority of the NA books I’ve read I couldn’t connect with the female characters, and sometimes it was tough trying to get through a book that’s told completely from their point of view. I found myself a lot more drawn and connected with the male characters.
I figured it would make sense for me to just find some NA books told from the guy’s point of view. For a while, I scoured the bookstores looking for something suitable, but came up with very little. The closest were the stories with dual-POVs (stories told from both the male and female characters). Most of the books that were told strictly from the guy’s perspective were books 2 and beyond in a series, and I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to read a series out of order.
My endless search led me to reading such titles like: Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire and Breakable by Tammara Webber. These hidden gems were exactly the kinds of books I was looking for all along, and I wondered why there weren’t more books like these. I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t want to know what the hot book boyfriend is thinking?
Frustrated that I couldn’t find more books like these, I decided to write my own, and that’s how the Anderson Brothers came about. I wanted to write something completely different, yet still feel like your traditional New Adult book. I wanted some diverse main characters. I wanted the guy to actually be a nice, respectable gentleman instead of a mindless, grunting Neanderthal. I mean, seriously. The majority of my friends are guys, and many of them are respectable and still keeping chivalry alive. I wanted a full-length book without a cliffhanger. Unable to find the right type of book to read drove me crazy.
Dominick, Kevin, and Michael Anderson came to me so vividly in my head as I wrote each of their stories in record time. I ended up finishing the first drafts of all three books in about four months! It was truly the quickest I’ve ever written so many books. Mind you, this was also my first attempt at the Romance genre. I spent a lot of time reading these types of books, learning the qualities of the genre and other things. I also joined the Romance Writers of America to learn more techniques in writing Romance. I was really serious about wanting to share my stories with readers like me who might be looking for more male-POV books.
I’m so glad I’ve released these books to the world. So many people have enjoyed Scarred and are looking forward to the rest of the series. And I’m happily writing even more stories like these, beyond the Anderson brothers. And now with the recent release of Grey by E.L. James, we may start to see more male-POV books popping up. I sure hope so. I have an insatiable urge to read more hero-oriented stories!
