A metamorphosis—not by choice but by the will to survive - Metamorphosis (Siren Songs #1) by Stephie Walls

Published: September 30th, 2014

Description: 18+

Cameron Pierce is an overachiever—CEO of Regional Bank, force to be reckoned with in the Boardroom, and beautiful to boot. At 24, an earth-shattering event set her life goals. But is she fulfilled? Idolized by those around her she’s—kind, forceful, intelligent, driven, and successful. Cam is surrounded by close friends and consumed by her career.

At first glance, Dax Cooper appears to be a playboy—carefree, cocky, arrogant, and devoid of intelligent thought but sexy with a face and a body that drive women crazy. Cameron believes in this façade when he continually manages to walk right past her gatekeeper with constant interruptions. He is everything she doesn’t like in a male. Unlike Cam, Dax has walked away from a talent and a life that had been his passion in exchange for family and friends. Unmotivated by money and a career, he too is embarking on change.

Tragedy strikes Cameron for the second time in her life. Attacked by a stranger, in an instant, her life, her psyche, and the essence of her being appear to be permanently scarred at best. If she survives the physical injuries, will she survive the mental trauma?

Metamorphosis is the story of a woman’s struggle to regain her confidence and repair her shattered life following a random, brutal attack. With the help of the man she had pushed away, she chooses the path that she will follow for the rest of her life. She undergoes a metamorphosis—not by choice but by the will to survive.

(Each novel in this series can be read as a stand-alone with no cliffhangers.)

I have a serious addiction to anything Coach and would live on Starbucks if I could get away with it. If you follow me on Facebook you'll also find that I'm slightly enamored with Charlie Hunnam. I'm also a tad obsessed with tattoos and have thirteen scattered on my canvas. I'm an avid reader (literary whore to be more precise) averaging around 300 novels a year and wish I had time to read more.

I currently work full-time in the Greenville area and fill my "extra" time (haha) with reading anything I can get my hands on and writing contemporary romance novels with a hint of erotica. This has been a dream of mine for years and I couldn't have done it without the support of my husband and BFF Tracy who both pushed me to keep going when I didn't have the confidence or the patience.

True Love may cost a price - Melanie's Evanescent Journey (Sonar #1.5) by B. Truly

Description:

True Love may cost a price, if the greater good preordains that you are the sacrifice.

There are always two sides to a story. Melanie Wilhelm's begins after she moves from Australia and starts her senior year at Cashmere High. On her first day, she bumps into a mysterious guy, and they form an instant connection. They become friends and he shares his deepest secret with her. As they grow closer, their relationship amplifies and becomes binding. Strange things occur, but instead of worrying, Melanie's feelings intensify.

The excitement of New Year's Eve approaches, and so does Jason's most devastating revelation of all. She learns his ultimate truth and is now spun into his chaotic web. The danger rises and hard choices must be made. By being with Jason, Melanie may have to sacrifice more than her heart. It may cost her life.

Melanie's Evanescent Journey ties into books one and two of The Sonar Trilogy. From spiraling twists to devastating plots, her journey will make you question fate and true love.

Is fate something you can control? Some believe it's in the hands of what you behold.

GUEST POST
Fate VS Free Will

Does fate decide our destiny? Are we pre-ordained to be with one person, our soul mate? It’s a concept which is dwelt within the hearts of many.

Fate is a complex fundamental. I ride both sides of the fence. I believe several things in life I can control. Careers, location, and religion are aspects that I can control. There are other elements that can’t be controlled, such as our nationality and lifespan.

As for love, that’s very tricky. Love’s threshold is so bold it has no boundaries to hold. I’m a true romantic. So I do believe in soul mates. The question is will I ever find true love?

I feel I have to trust my heart. I also believe in faith and that it will guide me.

Some view that as a comforting idea, especially towards the end of life. But they do not believe in soul mates. They think we have free will to choose whomever we want while on Earth. Also there are people that are better suited for us than others.

Eternity with your soul mate is an intriguing belief. I myself believe I will see my loved ones again. Eternity is a mystery which we will soon see unveiled.

Over the past year, this topic arose from my novel, Sonar The Crashing. If my spouse acquired amnesia and fell in love with someone else, would I fight for my marriage? Fate verses free will had a lot of controversy.

I would love your point of view on the topic. I took several polls and fighting for the spouse got the most votes. I feel the majority presume that they can control fate. Many believe that fate is in their control. Others think it is in the hands of what you behold. Please message me on Goodreads or email my blog.

EXCERPT

Work was busy this evening and it was a welcome distraction. I worked as a waitress with Ebony at the Burger Grill. It was a small, family-owned diner. It had been around for over forty years. Ebony had gotten me on a few weeks ago.

“How was your day?” Ebony asked as we were putting our aprons on.
“I’m getting used to the flow of school. How was yours?”
“It will be better once this shift is over. I’m bloated and cramping today.”
“Did you take some medicine?”
“Yes, but it hasn’t kicked in yet. Any luck with J?”
“Not sure. We talked some.”
“At least he is talking with you. It’s a good sign.”
“I hope so.”
“People are getting seated in our sections. We’d better get to our tables,” she said.
We tended to our tables, and around an hour later, Ebony tapped me on my shoulder.
“Look what the cat dragged in. I sat him in your section,” she said and giggled. I saw Jason across the room, sitting with his brother and sister.
“Thanks a lot,” I said, sarcastically. Now I would have to face him again.
“You’re welcome,” she replied still laughing and walked off.
I took in a deep breath and went to their table.
“Hi guys, I’m Melanie. What can I get for you this evening?”
Jason looked up in surprise and blushed slightly, making my stomach do a somersault. Their sister said, “Hi Melanie. We get to formally meet now, I’m Harmony. And I will have a Coke.”
She and her brother did look exactly alike. “Are you guys twins?” I blurted out.
“Yes,” her brother replied. “Nice to meet you, Melanie. I’m Jaden. How do you like Cashmere so far?”
“It’s okay, but slightly different from school in Australia.”
“I love your accent,” Jaden said.
“Thanks.” Jaden was handsome, but his brother was gorgeous.
“Melanie, how long have you been working here? My siblings and I come here often,” Jason interrupted and appeared to give his brother an evil glare.
“For just a few weeks.”
He looked like wanted to ask something else but didn’t.
“What can I get you guys to drink?” I didn’t want to stand there making goo-goo eyes at him.
“I will have a Coke,” Jaden said.
“And I will have a Sprite,” Jason replied.
“Coming right up.”
I brought them back their drinks, took their food order, and took care of my other tables. A little while later Ebony stood next to me, waiting on her order.
“I’ve noticed he keeps staring at you.”
“Who?”
“You know who. Jason.”
“Don’t you have tables to tend to?” I replied playfully.
“I just thought you should know.”
She winked at me and took her food order. He was eating a French fry. Gosh, he even looked sexy doing that. He caught my eye and signaled for me to come over.
“We’d like the check, please,” Harmony said.
“Sure,” I answered, pulling out the bill and placing it on the table.
“So Melanie, are you seeing anyone?” Jaden asked.
Excuse me! He was very direct. I had just met him. Harmony giggled, and Jason turned red. I cleared my throat. “No, not at the moment. Why?”
“Maybe we can hang out sometimes,” he replied with a smile. He leaned back and folded his arms behind his head, waiting for an answer. Harmony was amused, and Jason looked aggravated.
“Um no. Absolutely not.”
“Geez, well why not?”
“Because Ebony’s my friend first off, and second, I have my eye on someone else.”
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t know you guys were friends,” he replied, looking remorseful.
“Yeah, we are good friends,” I said, walking off.
I went to the kitchen and glanced back at their table. Harmony and Jason were laughing. Jaden appeared annoyed. Served him right. It was obvious he thought he was Mr. Casanova.
“What was Jaden talking to you about?” Ebony asked.
“Nothing much, the usual. He noticed my accent and wondered where I was from,” I lied. I wasn’t about to tell her he was flirting. He did apologize when he realized we were friends though, so maybe he wasn’t a total douche. I glanced back over to my section, but they were gone.
*****
After my shift I stopped at the corner store. There were only a few cars in the parking lot, and no one in sight. I headed to my car, and hit the alarm. Before I could get the door open someone grabbed me from behind. I struggled against them, and fought with all my might, but he dragged me into the side alley. Another person charged from the side, and then something hit me in the head. I fell to the ground, and touched my throbbing wound. It was dark with only the side light from the building, so I couldn’t see the blood clearly. But I could feel the liquid stickiness on my fingers. I squinted in the dim light, straining to see my attackers, but I couldn’t see any facial features. They were blurry. They appeared to be males with short hair, and their broad body frame.
“Leave me alone!”
One man’s response was a kick to my stomach. I gasped and cringed in pain. Why was this happening to me? I had been told that burglaries and assault hardly ever happened on this side of town. Me and my rotten luck were going to make the crime rate sky rocket. Taking a deep breath, I gathered my courage, and tried to get up. One of the men pushed me back down. I saw an object in his hand, the silver color bounced off of the light. It was a knife. I had to find a way out of this. Heat pulsed through my body as I glared into his eyes. And fear consumed me with the black depths of them, dark as midnight. The other man held me down, and I fought to get out of his grasp. The one with the blade leaned closer to me. He didn’t have on a mask, but I still couldn’t make out his features. He was faceless. He thrust the blade against my neck. The pain was sharp, and tears sprang into my eyes.
“Please stop! Why are you doing this?”
He snorted. “Because the greater good has preordained it.”
Before I could contemplate his strange explanation he slit the knife against my throat.

Ivanore hunched over the parchment, the tip of her quill flicking above her hand like a trapped bird desperate for escape. The tallow candle cast a cramped circle of light across the table, hardly enough to see by. If only the night would last a little longer. Perhaps then she would have enough time to write everything she needed to. But alas, time was one thing she had too little of—that and light.

An older man with long, gray-streaked hair and piercing gray eyes, waited beside her. The stone bungalow, their most recent of many hiding places, boasted the barest of furnishings: the table, stool, cot—and a plain wooden chest, its key held tight in his fist.

A sudden thump sounded at the door, startling them both. A strand of Ivanore’s hair, gold as the candle light, fell across the page. She quickly tucked it back into place and wrote faster.

Zyll laid a hand on Ivanore’s shoulder. “They are here,” he whispered.

Ivanore finished the document and handed it to Zyll unbound. Turning to the chest, he carefully laid the pages inside.

“Wait,” said Ivanore. “Will you keep this as well?” A flat circle of pale green crystal lay in her open palm.

“But you will need it. I mustn’t—”

“Please,” she insisted, pressing it into his hand. “I can’t risk losing this one.”

Zyll reluctantly folded his fingers around the cool stone. “Of course, milady,” he said. Then, adding the crystal to the parchment, he laid a plate of thin wood atop them both, sealing the chest’s false bottom. He closed the lid and locked it.

The pounding at the door grew more insistent. Whoever stood outside was using his full weight against it in an effort to break through.

“We must hurry,” said Zyll.

Ivanore allowed herself a quick glance at the chest, offering the briefest of prayers that the gods would keep it safe until her return. Then, taking her by the arm, Zyll ked her through the low archway dividing the bungalow’s front room from the back.

A loud crash of splintering wood resounded through the bungalow. Their visitors had finally broken in.

“Find her now!” a deep voice bellowed.

Grateful for the trousers she now wore instead of her usual cumbersome skirts, Ivanore clambered onto a stool and through a narrow window, lowering herself as quietly as possible to the ground outside. Once Zyll had done the same, they stole away across the rocky field. Though the sky was black as ink, their path was illuminated by the amber glow of volcanic fissures scoring the area for miles around.

“There she is!” a man’s voice shouted behind them. The words sent spasms of fear through Ivanore. She glanced behind her and saw three soldiers emerge from the bungalow, wearing the gold and red cross of her father’s crest. They had tracked her even here, to the remotest corner of Imaness. Would Fredric ever let her be?

Ivanore stopped running. She looked at Zyll, her trusted guardian and ally these past months since she had fled Dokur, and knew her time with him had come to an end.

“You’ll watch over them until I return?” she asked, out of breath. “Keep them safe. Don’t let my father find them.”

“You have my vow,” Zyll whispered, his voice tight with emotion.

Ivanore’s eyes welled with tears as she pressed her lips against the calloused skin of Zyll’s hand.

“Go,” said Zyll. “Go now before it’s too late.”

Ivanore released Zyll’s hand and sprinted forward alone. As she ran, she cupped her hands around her mouth and let out a loud, sharp call, much like that of a hawk or an eagle. She risked another glance over her shoulder and watched as Zyll turned to face their pursuers. As the soldiers neared, their swords glinting in the fireglow, Zyll held up his hands. A horizontal bolt of cerulean lightning shot out from his palms, striking the oncoming soldiers. The men recoiled, their bodies instantly singed and bloody.

Ivanore ran on. In desperation, she repeated her call, and this time another voice called back. A dark form appeared on the horizon, silhouetted against the light of the volcanic fractures and growing larger as it approached with tremendous speed. As it neared, the creature’s massive feathered wings moved the air around Ivanore in warm, powerful gusts. Ivanore saw clearly its eagle’s head with a beak large enough to break a man in two, paired with the muscular, furred body of a lion. As she ran toward it, the gryphon lowered its head, waiting.

Behind her, the soldiers reeled in pain, but they did not forget their duty. One man struggled to his knees, grunting from the effort. Reaching over his shoulder, he slid a short bow and arrow from his pack and swiftly took aim.

Ivanore reached the gryphon, and in one smooth motion hoisted herself onto its back, twisting her arms deep into the feathers on the creature’s neck. In that same moment, a single arrow found its mark in Ivanore’s shoulder. Ivanore cried out before her body slumped forward and her mind went dark. The gryphon took flight then, and in less time than it took to draw another arrow—or a breath—they had vanished into the night.

The hell breaks loose - Hysteriata (Elyzian Chronicles #1) by D.A. Botta

Description:

Emily Hobbs is off to Salem State College when a chance encounter with a fortuneteller changes everything. Emily is transported to the realm of Elyzia and learns that she is, in fact, one of the most powerful witches in existence.

Madame Lavache, the strict headmistress of Cedalion Covenstead, has her sights set on Emily. In her desperate cling to power, Lavache attempts to protect her tyranny by invoking sinister forces, including bloodthirsty pirates and The Devil himself, to rid Elyzia of the rebellious witch.

Along with her companions – an old hermit, a small coven of witches, and their totems – Emily sets out on a collision course with destiny.

Just as the tarot foretold.

A powerful witch
A simple tarot read
And all hell breaks loose

New Adult is a real shift from young adulthood to adulthood. It’s that brief space in time where things are really exciting and a person has to figure out who they are. For some people, it’s a traumatic experience. It can be tremendously invigorating too. I think, for stories, it makes for extra dramatic (any perhaps traumatic) events – psychological, emotional, spiritual or physical. I try to capture a lot of these perspectives throughout the series.

EXCERPT

Emily slunk closer to the glowing well and peered into its depths. The water bubbled and swelled in the hardened clay of underground. The candlelight illuminated the ceiling, casting shine and shadows dispersing throughout the dark. Hues of blue and sediment captivated Emily.
The colors shifted. Now Paige danced drunkenly about a snapping fire. Her body enveloped by the orange glow of bonfire. Paronskaft shrunk back against the wall.
“That scene ” he blurted, “is not for now.” He bit his lips closed and trembled.
Paige stood amongst the others, Gretchen and Melanie and Chloe, all of them. She waited for her turn to leap over the celebratory fire. First Gretchen leapt, then Chloe, Brenna and even Melanie, hurled themselves above the towering flame. There was laughter and music as the boys, too, leapt in their boots, soaring over the tops of the fire and crashing down on the other side. The ceremony burned into the autumn eve.
Paige leapt into the air wildly, drunk on wine, and the flames sucked her down into their belly. She seared and shrieked as her clothes burned away. The others watched horrified as the scorched silhouette flailed within the orange bonfire belly. Her hair turned quickly to dust and her skin blistered and charred. The shadow figure collapsed into miserable ashes and died wretchedly.
The image diluted into the watery pool and Emily fell to her knees and sobbed.
“It’s a trick!” Emily shouted, her voice echoing up through the chambers. “It’s a damned trick, you old fool!”
Paronskaft was taken aback, shocked at the insinuation. His feeble body shuttered against the affront. He wrapped his golden cloak tightly to his skeletal frame.
“I make no tricks, Miss Emily,” he quivered. “I make no tricks on you! Time is an essence.”
“I can stop this?! I can save Paige, you mean? How much time do I have?!”
“You have no time.”
Emily tore out of the cave and rode east, bounding along on Mongrel, weaving through clusters of trees and stones. The late night air splashed the last of the raindrops against her face while Mongrel galloped steadily toward the grounds. A few yards from the edge of the hillside, Mongrel shrunk into his miniature size, quickly and suddenly, which threw Emily off over his shoulders and into crumply dry grasses and brush.
“You could warn me, you know,” she admonished while she quickly laced up her boots. She retrieved a Scynderstem from Paronskaft’s box. “Meet me at the covenstead, okay?”
Mongrel yapped and pranced off.
“Go ahead and go!”
Emily secured her satchel over her shoulder crosswise and dug the balls of her feet into the ground. She leapt off, arcing and descending spans of nearly one hundred yards. The smoke from the bonfire crept up into the air over the eastern wall of Cedalion. I’m coming, Paige! she wailed in her mind. Emily soared and sailed toward the ceremony. Stop! Don’t leap!! she cried out inside. A lyre was playing, singing into the crisp air and laughter and dancing could be seen from the peaks.
Dread filled her bones.
Drew coasted over the seething flames. Then Melanie gracelessly rocketed over the fire. Next Ethan perfectly arced over. Wait! Don’t go! The scent of wine and embers wafted into Emily’s nose as she drew near. Nooo, my love! No!! The heat of the high flame pushed against her body. Paige crested the blaze and was pulled down just as Paronskaft’s pool had shown. Emily pressed her thumb into the Scynderstem and it broke as she leapt again, fearless at the fire, and cast the spell.
Paige wriggled and writhed in the hot orange glows, blackened already near the fire’s blue bottom. Emily wrapped her arms around Paige’s waist and dug her toes into the powdery ash to quickly leap again.
The pair landed near the twisty elm sprinkled with twinkling fireflies. Emily held Paige in her arms, resting what was left of her friend in her lap. Emily looked at her friend who heaved shallow breaths into the air. Paige’s body, smoldering still and black, released streams of smoke up passed the branches and into the air. Their eyes met and Emily let loose her woeful tears.
“I am here,” breathed Emily. “I am here with you.”
“I love you,” Paige mouthed as she departed.
“I love you Paige!” Emily wailed. “Don’t go! Don’t leave me!”
Paige’s eyes shut forever.
An astonished crowd gathered a few yards away, shaken witnesses to the sadness and grief. After a long moment, Emily slipped out from under Paige and tenderly set her body into the grass. Her face contorted and her entire body trembled with loss. She trudged over to where Paige and the others had sat. She snatched up Paige’s lantern of fireflies. She grew angry in her hurt. She raged in her mind and ached in her heart.
Observing from a ways off, the Madame and the Ladies and the Lyre Man observed the tragedy in solemn seclusion.
“That girl,” Madame Lavache whispered to herself, “is going to raise havoc.”
The glass jar shattered into glimmering slivers and the fireflies were released to the sinewy elm.

EXCERPT

I sat on a stool sipping champagne while I watched him lift a keg and tap it behind the bar. Not surprisingly, I wasn’t the only one watching the show either. Girls down the entire bar sat up and took notice when Maverick’s tattooed arms lifted the keg to place it in its spot. The ease at which he lifted the full keg was impressive enough, but the way his fitted t-shirt showed off his lean muscles and lifted slightly when his arms were raised—that little strip of skin had the attention of several ladies. The woman next to me crooned, “Dayuhm,” as soon as she saw his happy trail. She received a hateful glare from me, which she either ignored or didn’t notice. I wanted to smile haughtily when he came over and pressed his lips to mine once he was finished, but I was too busy enjoying his lips on mine. Take that, ladies. This man is with me, I wanted to say, but that seemed a little catty considering I had already won. The new me wasn’t going to be catty, though. Pulling out the claws had never felt right anyway.

Normal is overrated - Lullaby (Book of Dreams #1) by Bridgette O'Hare

Happy Release Day!

Description:

Halle Michaels is on the brink of insanity.

She’s haunted by dreams. Dreams that find their way into her reality. Nightmares of death…of destruction. Visions that will uncover the truth – about her abilities, her family’s origins, and her part in a prophecy that could change the world.

But when a mysterious book shows up on her doorstep, can those dreams save her from an overwhelming evil? One that has its sights set on Halle.

She wanted normal, but normal is overrated. She was born to be so much more.

About the author:
Bridgette O’Hare is a writerly life form evolved to live off of high doses of chocolate, excessive episodes of Once Upon a Time, and copious amounts of snark.
She spends her time in search of sleep, witty co-conspirators, the planet Gallifrey, and ways to unleash evil upon her characters in interesting ways. When she’s not torturing imaginary people, you can find her instigating questionable conversations on Facebook.
She is the ridiculously proud co-creator of two awesome male human beings with ambitions of being a crazy cat lady if her pursuit of marrying Chris Hemsworth proves futile.
Bridgette is recommended by 4 out of 5 people that recommend things. Number 5 was unavailable for comment.
