Review - Dear Wallflower by Sara Secora

Unlock your imagination and open the storybook of your soul as you cross the great divide between romanticism and reality. The bewildering depths of spirit lie in wait for those brave enough to take that imperative first step within.

REVIEW

If you check the author's "bio" on her blog, you'll see that the words, sound, and image are the coordinates of her artistic work. The poems from Dear Wallflower are also the result of this mix. Putting together words, manipulating the grammar rules, and augmenting with images or the force of the white page, the author signals her readers inviting them into her feelings.

I know that the effect of this personal project based on a personal (unhappy yet?) experience will be different from person to person depending on their own life experience and their preferences in poetry, but I expect that everyone will like at least one poem.

They call her a doll; porcelain and perfect by design.

Yet she knows what they truly think—she’s a doll;
a fragile toy easily left behind.

GUEST POST

I was young when I would scribble on blank pages and let my emotions trickle out a word at a time. I didn’t know then that what I was doing was writing poetry and prose. The process came so naturally to me and lifted my heart out grim places. It would invoke smiles and tears—both equally appreciated moments.

Then, as I grew into myself and into my position as an author, I unknowingly steered away from poetry, taking to more traditional genres such as young adult and fantasy novels.

For a long while, I would aimlessly scroll through Instagram and read endless posts from poets. The depth found in those terse words ignited that flame within me, inspiring old feelings I had lost touch with.

Now I’ve fallen hard and fast into poetry once more, and I think this time, it’s here to stay. Dear Wallflower, the return to where it all began, and the blossoming into something new.
