GUEST POST
Choosing a Title

I’m pretty sure a good portion of writers run away screaming at the mere thought of having to name their WIP (work in progress). Or maybe that’s just me.

Personally, I think finding the perfect title for your story is incredibly hard, and I usually go through a bunch of them until I find one I’m happy with. But even then that title is likely going to change once again when your book goes on submission or when you sign it because publishers/editors/agents simply have a better feel for what titles work and fit and which don’t.

A lot of things go into titles. It has to fit the story, make sense in relation to the plot, mirror the mood/themes/aesthetic/style of the book, be something that works for whatever genre your book belongs to—you’d hardly call a YA Horror Summer Kisses and Strawberries—and many other factors I have no idea of. I can only imagine how hard it is to choose titles, and title schemes, that work for a trilogy or series, or finding titles that haven’t been done yet in general.

ECHOES ended up having a very simple and short title, one word, that’s it. It perfectly fits the story, and also doesn’t really give anything away, which was important to me since ECHOES is the sort of story where, the less you know, the better.
Thank you so much for having me! :)

  1. I know with my own WIPs I struggle to think of even a halfway decent title. Most of them are just generically labeled for I always hoped if I got taken on by an agent/publisher/etc they'd work their magic to help me create the perfect title! Glad to know that I am not the only one to struggle with that!
