GUEST POST
Top 10 challenges of writing sci-fi

1.  There are no real reference books or set in stone rules – but this could also be classed as a good thing. Of course people expect a certain thing, but we can tweak the rules as we like. My next time travel book is using a whole other set of rules in their world to time travel.

2. Trying to take the science world, and manipulate it as close as you can to incorporate your fiction into it. Really – to take time, and the research on time, and try to figure out a place I could poke holes at and make sound believable was pretty tough.

3. Taking something as widely known as time travel, and making it unique, setting it apart from everything else and making my own ‘theories’ work.

4.  Breaking the mould, and setting the time travel in modern times. There are a lot of novels that actually do this, but when you look at time travel books, the most wide known are all set in historic times.

5. Bringing in other genre readers. Again, letting romance readers, and new adult readers know that a time travel book doesn’t have to be set in historic times. It can be about college age characters growing up, and experiencing this thing, while also dealing with their lives.

6. Tying everything together. To make something complex over the course of a twenty-year timeline and make sure it all comes together.

7. To include alternate realities or not?

8. How much sci-fi and fantasy lines to include. You’re technically creating a new version of the world, by saying that this thing, time travel or whatever is real – so what else is real? Monsters and aliens? Why or why not? Drawing the lines for each of your novels.

9. Being prepared to totally believe in your own made up theories, and persuade others that it works, only to make it all up again in your next book!

10. To make readers believe that it could actually happen!.
