no choice but to protect - Fire Born (The Guardian #1) by Rayanne Haines

"I really enjoyed this story. The world was deep, complex, and all the characters interesting. In fact, the author really has a knack for writing details that make the characters so vivid and real that you want to know more about all of them. " - Jane, Goodreads

When Alex Taleisin’s immortal DNA kicks in after a fight for her life against something not-quite-human in the YMCA parking lot, her Aunt finally lets her in on the family secret. They’re Immortal – Elementals to be precise. Only, Alex is a little something more, and until they discover what, her life is in danger.

Collum Thronus, Guardian of the Races and savage King of the Dragons has no choice but to protect Alex and find her father’s people. He made a promise and Collum always keeps his promises. Now, he needs to keep his hands of his charge.

Enter an insane grandfather, a shifter with a hidden agenda, and a witch with a shoe addiction and soon Alex is wishing for a quiet house in the hills with the dragon she’s falling for. But a battle is coming and Alex knows the only way to find her answers is to trust her powers and become the warrior she was destined to be.

GUEST POST
The Poetry of the Paranormal Romance

Hi everyone. My name is Rayanne Haines and I’m the author of Fire Born, book one in The Guardian Series. I’m also a poet and the executive director of the Edmonton Poetry Festival. Combining these two styles of writing into a career as an author has been both strange and exciting. How does a poet write paranormal romance? How does a romance author write poetry? I write narrative poetry. Not academic or experimental so I find I use a lot of story-telling tools in my poetry.

As a novelist, I try to use the tools I’ve learned as a poet in my writing. Creating lyrical sentences. Finding rhythm in language. Being concise. How can I say the most with few words? This is just as important in writing a novel as it is in poetry. I want to tell my story as succinctly as possible. No one wants to read a “wordy book”. Paranormal Romance has a poetry all its own. In this otherworldy genre, finding a strong and true voice is ultimately what I find most important. I want readers to see my characters as real and alive beings.

Rhythm plays a large role in creating feelings within the reader. I like short sentences that feed into each other. One word. Maybe two if necessary to convey the message. I’ll choose a period over a comma every time.

In paranormal the best romantic characters share the monster within all of us. The poetry of the writer helps lead the reader to overcome their aversion to the monster. To see this beast through the eyes of the poet. The presence of imagery and world building is essential to finding truth in your paranormal novel. Look for the poetic turns in describing color and landscape. These are important features.

I like to write in Third person POV. I give my fantasy creatures some human frailties and always a sense of humor needs to pop up in the book. Laughing is as sexy as sex. In the end though the toughest warrior needs his woman. The why is important. It’s what we’re all reading for.

  2. @Rayanne Haines

Happy to host you! and glad that you liked the topic :) Actually I started to like paranormal stories due to the poetry written by our best national poet (1850-1889)
