"Gripping and gritty, HAVEN had me glued to the pages from beginning to end! Rain is the best kind of hero -- tough, sexy, sweet, loyal. He charges through this action-packed tale that had me tearing up more than once, and I was perfectly happy to follow!" - Pintip Dunn, New York Times bestselling author of Forget Tomorrow.
Release Date: November 7th 2017
“We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.”
Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere. He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.
Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.
"Lindsey writes a hero with fire and gasoline. Then she lights a match with break-neck pacing, and scorches a path to readers' hearts. Don't blink for a moment." - Victoria Scott, bestselling author of Fire & Flood
MB's INTERVIEW
1. Is not a secret (at least on Goodreads) that you write also under the pseudonym Marissa Clarke. Why?
I seriously considered writing only under my real name, Mary Lindsey, but in the end decided to use a different name for adult projects. I speak at schools and a separate author name makes me more comfortable. I don’t hide my adult persona, in fact my websites are linked, but when a teen goes to look at my young adult books, they aren’t met on the home page with sexy adult covers and titles.
2. Rain, the main character will find something “worth dying for” – isn’t this a subject for an Adult story? – What are the differences, besides the obvious ones, when writing for different ages?
The main character in this book is eighteen, and finding purpose is what many young men and women long for as they enter adulthood—purpose beyond themselves. Haven is a story of hope and loyalty--of battling the oppression and subjugation of those who are perceived as less. It's a story about standing up for what's right.
I don’t write for an age. I write about an age. That said, I do tailor a project for the target age group in some respects. I faded to black in the sexier scenes in Haven, which I would not have done in an adult project, but the story is the same.
3. How important are in your opinion the titles and why did you change the title of the story from Hide from Me to Haven?
Titles are critical. They set the mood and tone of the book before the first page is read. The original working title was Haven, but because of a song written for it “Hiding from Me,” and the fact it had mystery elements, we went with Hide from Me. When I thought or talked about it, I always called it Haven and ultimately, we decided that Haven suited better since the book is as much romance and horror as it is suspense (which is what Hide from Me conveys). I love the title and cover. I think both fit the book perfectly.
4. From Shattered Souls published in 2012 – how do you think YA readers expectations changed?
I think readers want heroines and heroes who develop their own power, rather than fall into it unwittingly and they want heroes and heroines worthy of that power. Readers seek realistic representation, diversity, and themes deeper than “I’m special because I am.” A great example of this is Jennifer Mathieu’s MOXIE, in which the heroine, Viv, steps up to the plate and makes a huge difference, not because of who she is, but because she finds the strength to speak up for change. The books coming out today are extraordinary. It’s an exciting time to read and write YA.
About the author:
Mary Lindsey is a multi award-winning, RITA® nominated author of romance for adults and teens. She lives on an island in the middle of a river. Seriously, she does. When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, two Cairn Terriers, and one husband.
Inexplicably, her favorite animal is the giant anteater and at one point, she had over 200 "pet" Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. The roaches are a long story involving three science-crazed kids and a soft spot for rescue animals. The good news is, the "pet" roaches found a home... somewhere else.

I loved Mary's adult book Love Me to Death and I know that her YA book is going to be just as good.
