Among the many rivals - Henge (Le Fay #1) by Realm Lovejoy (Audio)

"Henge is hands down the most original YA novel I’ve read all year. It’s one of my favorite books I’ve read all year, if not the absolute favorite. While the writing wasn’t spectacular (the writing was all right but not amazing), the characters were fantastic and the world building blew me away. " - Majanka, Goodreads

Description:

Published: June 5th, 2017

Inspired by one of the greatest legends of all time….

Modern-day Camelot. Where knights no longer carry swords. Magic is dangerous. And those who seek control are not to be trusted.

Sixteen-year-old Morgan le Fay is a fire user. An ordinary girl with an extraordinary skill, she has the ability to create and command fire at will. Her dream is to become the Maven – the right hand of the future King Arthur. In the chance of a lifetime, Morgan is selected to join Arthur’s Round, an elite group of young magic users from which the new Maven will be chosen.

Along with the other fire, water, and wind users in Arthur’s Round, Morgan is rigorously trained and tested. The handsome Merlin, a brilliant water user, takes a particular interest in her. Is his friendship to be trusted, or is Merlin simply trying to win the position of Maven for himself? Among the many rivals Morgan faces is the current Maven, Mordred, who seems determined to see her fail.

But Morgan has a secret – years ago, her mother was executed for using fire magic, and Morgan’s desire for justice makes her more than ready to take on the challenge before her. Can she prevail in Camelot’s tests of survival and magic? Only time – and Morgan’s powerful fire – will tell.

EXCERPT

Though I can’t make anything of it, as soon as I stepped into Camelot I sensed a web of connections—though the threads are invisible to me and I don’t know what kind of spider sits at the center of it all.

Guinevere nods and looks at someone else in the distance. “Oh, how about that girl? Her name is Vivian.”

I look in the direction to which she points. I don’t know if it’s just because Vivian took my second place medal, but something about her gives me a bad taste in my mouth. Vivian stands with the grace of a poised lily, her pearly dress shimmering over her slim body. Her platinum-blond hair, as shimmery as diamonds, slinks down her back as she tosses her head, raising her curved nose. Gray uniforms surround her, a throng of knights standing around admiring her.

“Can you show me water magic?” I hear a knight ask. “You have your license, right?”
“Of course I have my license,” Vivian says, smiling with the contented look of a cat.
“Naturally,” the knight says. “I am legally bound to ask, you understand.”

She smiles, faux-sheepish, and then brings her hand out, pointing into the air. A stream of water reflecting the candlelight wobbles out of her finger. It snakes into the air across the table full of appetizers, dodging the vase, the candles, and the basket of bread. The water crawls toward a glass of wine and then slumps in, swirling against the glass, turning the wine pink. The water dances out of the cup, now colored reddish from the wine. Then it spins, turning to a red mist, and zips across the candle, causing a fiery, coin-sized explosion.

Everyone exclaims and claps as she elegantly curtsies. I gape myself. Her magic is like Merlin’s—complex, strategic, and shape-shifting—unpredictable.
