Only one thing is certain - Atlantis Quest (Atlantis Rising #2) by Gloria Craw

I am different. I have always been different, but no one can know or my life will be in danger. So I hide in plain sight, wearing drab clothes and thick glasses and trying to be invisible. I’m so good at hiding, no one has ever noticed me. Until Ian…the mysterious and oh-so-cute boy I know I need to avoid.

Description:

Get ready for the exciting follow up to Atlantis Rising, dubbedAn enchanting debut from a promising new author of paranormal YAby Kirkus Reviews.

After all they'd cost me, I thought I was done with the Truss clan. I was wrong. Nikki Dawning, my mortal enemy, has beenkidnapped, and I've been asked to spy on the Truss to find her. The pull between Ian and I has never been stronger, but he can't help me this time. I have to rely on Theron, a bad-tempered cousin I didn't know I had. To make matters worse, the people I trust have been keeping secrets.

I'm starting to feel like a weapon in a war I don't understand. How far am I willing to go to protect the descendants of Atlantis and the common good when I'm not sure what the common good is anymore?

Only one thing is certain. If I'm the next Laurel clan chief, I can't let myself be manipulated…by anyone.

GUEST POST
From Plato via utopia to Atlantis Rising

Plato famously described Atlantis as an island of lush vegetation with a climate so mild there were two harvest a year instead of one. It may be a bit surprising then, that the Atlantis Rising series begins in Las Vegas, Nevada, about the most dissimilar place you can imagine.

He wrote that the first people of Atlantis lived simple, peaceful lives. They were unique from other civilizations because there was equality among them in economics, government and justice. Seeing their virtue, the gods favored them and rewarded them with a wide understanding of science, architecture, seafaring and engineering. In time, their advanced technology made them rich...and wealth corrupted them. Plagued by selfishness and greed, the people sent warriors to fight and invade other nations.

The gods who had once favored them for their morality were angered. Not only did they help the Athenians win a battle against them, they sent fire, floods, and earthquakes to shake Atlantis. No sooner did the warriors arrive home, than the entire island sank into the sea, never to be seen again.

The history of the people and their island is different in the Atlantis Rising series. They enjoyed advanced science and technology not as a reward from the gods but because their minds evolved much faster than those of human’s. Their bodies evolved faster too, so they lived longer, developed perfect recall, and healed rapidly. Most impressive was their ability to manipulate the human mind.

As in the myth, the people of Atlantis lived virtuous, egalitarian lives. One of their fundamental principles was to avoid involvement in human affairs.Things changed when a power-hungry man proposed they turn humankind into a subservient race, controlled by their mind powers. He accumulated followers until more than half of the population supported him. To prevent this morally reprehensible act, a faction of the people sank the island with a bomb.

The series picks up thousands of years later in Las Vegas and focuses on a small group of people descended from those who destroyed Atlantis. They look human but have all the physical, mental, and technological advancement of their ancestors. Their peaceful existence is threatened when a power-hungry member revives the plan to enslave humans. It’s up to one girl, who thought the island of Atlantis never existed, to stop him and save both humankind as well as the descendants of Atlantis.

  1. I guess I'm intrigued by the fact that I've always heard of a lost city somewhere in the ocean but have never seen any real proof of it. I'd like to read how the author perceives the development of the city and it's people :)
