What emerges from the portal between Earth and Ankhsis in the middle of the turmoil rocking both worlds is more dead than alive. Neither human, nor baseborn, and certainly not trueborn. This new being will either damn them all or be their race’s most powerful weapon. Will they trust it not to destroy them, or will Ankhsis decide putting it down is the only solution?
In the end, who is guilty? Who will pay? Will anyone survive its wrath?

Blood Bonds and Colors – A few concepts of my vampire world
Creating a vampire world that is different enough to be enticing, yet familiar enough that the lovers of the genre are happy with it might seem difficult. To me, it was a lot of fun. Especially the part where I prove old vampires wrong as the story progresses.
The first concept I changed was the origin of vampires. I made them travelers from a different realm that came to Earth and exhibited certain superhuman physical abilities, along with heightened emotions and a thirst for blood. These trueborn vampires later turned humans, and thus the baseborn appeared.At some point the father of all vampires had a meltdown and wiped most baseborns out. That led to a silent but ongoing conflict between the two types of vampires and it’s what sparked the actions in The Edge of Hope.
Another thing I wanted to play with was how important who turned you was to any baseborn vampire. The closer you got to the source, the stronger you were. So first generation, second, and third are day walkers, even if for a very limited time for the more diluted lineage. When you move further along, well, sunny days become a problem.
I chose the color green, in a shiny, neon shade for the eyes of a vampire. Of course, only when they go feral, they are free to retain their natural color otherwise. I know the all-black or the red eyes are big, but I liked the cold stare of a big, cat-like predator. It also happened to look awesome on the cover.
The other excuse to explore some vampiric traits was the blood bond between Alexa and Louis. While Louis thinks it only affects the two of them, they later discover it’s just like any other innate vampire ability – one of them has to manifest it. Like Louis’ healing, some vampires show special traits that can be inherited by those they later turn. The only surprise is that Alexa was able to tap into this ability even without being turned.
I also took something that’s usually associated with werewolves – saliva that closes wounds faster – and gave it to my vampires. The logic was simple: if they bite and want to not kill their victims, it would help to have a good coagulant. Helps keep the food fresh :D
When the traits and concepts and rules were all ready, the one thing that mattered most to me was to give each vampire of any kind a distinct personality. I didn’t want to make them all evil or all good, but they are certainly all potentially dangerous!
