After a decade as a volunteer at the New Hampshire Highland Games, a Scottish festival dedicated to sharing Scottish heritage with the masses, I created books where my time travel stories meld Highlanders from ancient Scotland and modern-day New England. After reading about Scottish mythology and watching vendors sell everything from heather to wool plaids to bottled potions, I weave tales full of witches, time travel, and kilted Highlanders. I filled notebooks with my interpretation of the sights, smells, sounds, and history of the games.

Besides the costumes and weaponry people wear to these festivals, there are sports, food, craft displays, music, and venders beneath tents selling everything under the sun. The aroma of meat pies mingles with the tang of fresh-squeezed lemonade. Sheep, herded by a border collie, run near tent-covered platforms where pretty girls dance a Highland fling. Bagpipers march while craftspeople spin wool or tell tales to children.

The games, the term for athletic events, were a way to hone skills. Coming together once or twice a year gave a community a sense of camaraderie during a time of upheaval in Scotland. Foot races kept messengers ready should they need to spread the word of a battle. Skill and determination easily kept young Scots ready for war or any threat to their livestock, or women.

Research has added to my list of possible story ideas. I have since completed a three-book series called Highland Games Through Time and have recently published the second book in the Kilted Athletes Through Time series. My Dark Highlander is full of intrigue, villains, reunited lovers born 400 years apart, and ornery cows and horses who pull their own weight when times get tough.

I believe there is nothing sexier than a man in a kilt; the way it hangs low on his waist, the way it swirls when he moves, giving us a peek of muscular calves and maybe a bit of tanned thigh. This is the imagery within my books, guaranteed to give all readers romantic dreams.
