If you have read other of my reviews, you should have known by now that my way to choose the books I read is a bit different. If I like an excerpt or an idea sparks my attention I go for it without looking for others’ opinion or any other preparations, especially that I have a bad opinion in what regards the blurbs (they tend to reveal too much or to trivialize the subject) and not always the reviews was helpful. Using this method I gain some quite “nice” experiences and most of them were good ones. In Alec case, I didn’t read the blurb and that, at some specific point, intensified my reaction (and I consider that it is always a good thing). I was attracted by an excerpt posted during a blitz that Mythical Books hosted. It promised fun, witty characters and a mission to win the heart of the heroine (and to tame the hero). And this is what I get. At first.
Gradually, the story step out from this “common” line and added something more intense, darker (to use the trendy term) and unexpected (even more of it if you don’t read the blurb). The issues that I encountered put my principles to the test. That because, even if I am an open mind person, the application of your own principles to the “real” facts and situations could not be so easy that you thought. Mrs. Casey made me put myself in the characters’ shoes and to ask myself about what my reaction could be in those precise situations. For this, the book gained big points from me. I have strong opinions regarding some life aspects, but I’m still asking myself how some readers could be so superficial and think everything in black or white. If somebody is ready to sacrifice himself / his happiness for a greater good, it’s really matter how he does it?
In our day romance literature can be recognized: (1) the current that asks explicit sex scenes, (2) the authors tend to put together so deep agonizing drama that make their plots unreal. Mrs. Casey plays at these borders and manages to not cross the “too much” line.
Another thing that I liked was the POV in which the story is told. Considering that the title is Alec and that the series is named Slater Brothers, I was expected that the story to be told from Alec’s POV or, at least, at third person. It was not the case. The reader will have to learn about the male main characters through the eyes of another person. His torment, his emotional and past scars are to be discovered together with the heroine's ones and in her own pace.
The characters are not perfect, they are not ideal, but they seems that they could be real. The secondary characters are colorful and I cannot wait to read more about them. Uncle Brandon is a sum of shades and his totally different attitudes make him to deserve his own story.
Conclusion: Could it be better? Probably, but I liked it. I found humor, drama, some good lines, love and lust, danger and Storm, issues to think about it, and nice characters. Try it, it’s possible that you 'll like it too. That if you are an open mind person :D.
