MB's INTERVIEW
Thank you, Mrs. Rose Garcia
Why young adult?
I’ve always been a fan of young adult fiction even before it was such a huge thing. (Example: Carrie by Stephen King, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott) In YA, the protagonist is a teen dealing with a MAJOR issue. And, as a teen, just about everything is a life or death situation! LOL Now when you add in a real catastrophic event and mix it with raging hormones, love interests, and conflicted emotions, you’ve got an awesome book on your hands! And that’s ultimately what drew me to writing YA. Plus, I love all the angst!
How hard was and what were the challenges of the transition from the lawyer writing style to the artistic one?
Legal writing helped me tremendously as I transitioned to fiction writing in that my grammar was really good. Specifically, I didn’t have any major issues with sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling. The writing techniques I needed to work on were things like pacing, voice, and structure. These are things you don’t focus on in law school! In order to educate myself on fiction writing, I knew I needed to connect with my local writing community. This amazing community exposed me to writing workshops, introduced me to books on writing, and helped me find some awesome critique partners. The thing about writing, and really in any profession, is that there are always ways to improve and grow.
“Reincarnation” (or similar way for the multiple lives), magic, action, danger, romance… what is/are the secret ingredient/s of a great fantasy story?
In my opinion, the secret ingredient in fantasy writing is making your world believable. Everything has to make sense, otherwise readers won’t buy into a story. I love immersing myself in books about other-worlds and fantastical creatures, but if the story at any times fails to “ring true” with me, then I’m out. Game over for the book. I keep this front and center in my mind when writing my own books. Everything has to make sense.
Entertainment is always good, but what is opinion about the fact that a good book should transmit messages to the reader?
Many picture books, early reader books, and some middle grade books are message driven. Some common messages you’ll see are: believe in yourself, always do the right thing, work hard, etc. Messages like these often fall into the category of theme as you move into YA fiction and even adult fiction. So, the book is less about the message and more about the theme. (I hope that makes sense! LOL) However, every once in a while I’ll come across a heavy message driven book and as for me, I don’t particularly care for them. Why? Because I’m reading for entertainment! I want to be taken away! I don’t need anyone to preach to me. If I did, I’d go grab a book off the non-fiction aisle or the self-help aisle. There are some seriously good books like that, but just not what I’m looking for in fiction.
How the character Dominique was born? How is she?
Dominique has a Transhuman mother and father. Transhumans are like other humans with one exception: they are able to use their entire brain and therefore can control the energy in and round them. So she was born like any person would be born. When the Transhumans split into two factions, the Pure and the Tainted, and started fighting, they agreed to let their fate rest on the outcome of one soul: Dominique. And so she was given nine chances at life. It’s almost like a cosmic do-over, if that makes sense!
Rose Garcia is a lawyer turned writer who's always been fascinated by science fiction and fantasy. From a very young age, she often had her nose buried in books about other-worlds, fantastical creatures, and life and death situations. More recently she's been intrigued by a blend of science fiction and reality, and the idea that some supernatural events are, indeed, very real. Fueled by her imagination, she created The Transhuman Chronicles--a series of books about people who have overcome human limitations.

Beautiful cover, and the premise sounds really interesting. I enjoyed the interview and totally agree with the message driven end. Usually, I grab a book to escape reality, not dive more into it.

ReplyDeleteHi, Rose!
ReplyDeleteI also love the angst of the teens, and the fact that all conflicts are turned into huge issues. That's why YA readings are so interesting for us adults.
