Review and Giveaway: Naomi Grim (The Silver Scythe Chronicles #1) by Tiffany Nicole Smith

REVIEW

Can a Grim have a soul? Can a Grim feel pity and compassion for the people whose lives came to the end? If you will read Naomi Grim will find that, yes, it’s possible and you will find the reasons that impel her to act in this way. Her? Yes, it seems that Grim has gender.

As it is a fantasy book, the author has created an entire parallel grim world, that it seems quite similar to the human one. And exactly because it's a fantasy story, I'd have liked that this parallel universe to be a little more diversified, more stranger, darker, grimmer, more ... you understand what I mean. But besides the lack of some facilities, of some ways to have fun and certain forms of human society, the world is about the same: fathers, mothers, brothers, currency, food like ours, jeans, sneakers, cars, electronic devices, etc. The primary difference is how they earn their existence ... literally. And because I mentioned the currency, it seems that Grims suffer from one of the passions that haunt the human soul: that of enrichment. Like this the story drifts slowly toward a dystopian one.

A society divided into castes: the rich, with many years in possession that they seem immortal, a middle class, the outcast and ... the rebels. A society where coercion rules are applied by a supreme ruler at will, and the years of life are the current coin.

As every story must have a hero, Naomi is the lever that will trigger the riot. Naomi is an atypical grim (you'll understand why), reluctant, that casts doubt on the existing state of things, that feels pity and compassion. And the compassion, the kindness, the love, and her way of being are the sparks that will ignite the firestorm that will engulf her world. Most times, however, the kindness is confused with the naivety, for not using a harsher word, and the consequences of her actions put the lives of loved ones in danger. She will wake up that she is the small pawn in the confrontation of two unscrupulous kings. A game in which the mercy has no place at the table, and the players seem to be when friends, when enemies according to their interests. If money or life is at stake in this game you will find yourself reading the book.

Anyway, you will find just the beginning of Naomi’s adventures, because as you'll notice, this is the first volume of The Silver Scythe Chronicles and either if you like it or not, you'll not have a clear denouement, the ending of the novel being a cliffhanger one.

The novel is lovely written, enjoyable, accessible, with not too much descriptions or introductions, the action runs smoothly, with a good pace, and I think that the young people to whom the series is addressed will find the book to their taste.

Happy Reading!
