Guest Post and Giveaway: The Violet Hour by Whitney A. Miller

Release Date: March 8th, 2014

Description:

The voice inside me is breaking free. I can't stop it.

Some call VisionCrest the pinnacle of religious enlightenment. Others call it a powerful cult. For seventeen years, Harlow Wintergreen has called it her life.

As the daughter of VisionCrest's patriarch, Harlow is expected to be perfect at all times. She must be considered a paragon of integrity by the other Ministry teens and a future leader in the eyes of the world.

Despite the constant scrutiny Harlow is keeping a dark and dangerous secret, even from her best friend and the boy she loves. She hears a voice in her head that seems to have a mind of its own, plaguing her with violent and bloody visions. It commands her to kill. And the urge to obey is getting harder and harder to control....

GUEST POST
Between Gore and Thrill
What’s scary to you?

Does the thought of the serial killer Jigsaw, from the movie Saw, tormenting his victims and throwing blood against the walls keep you up at night? Or, is it more Paranormal Activity that makes you shiver with fear – unexplained things that go bump in the night, taunt you through the looking glass, and make objects move of their own volition? Maybe it’s Jack Torrance from The Shining who you find truly terrifying. Just a normal guy who comes undone at the metal seams and go on a murderous rampage—the type of monster we see all the time in real life. All of these examples illustrate the spectrum that defines the horror genre – from gore to thrill.

As an author writing in the genre I always find it fascinating how readers’ fear response is triggered by different things. For some, it’s the blood and guts that gets them. I can’t tell you how many people have said some of the eyeball-related imagery in The Violet Hour gave them nightmares, while I see extreme gore and just sort of shrug. For others, it’s the malicious phenomena – a character’s own reflection smiling at her in the mirror while she looks on in horror, a shadow that gains a life of its own – that scares the beejezus out of them (I’m in this camp!). And for some, it’s the it-could-happen-to-you true life scenarios that frighten them the most….the idea of a sinister religion taking over the world or someone with a screw loose going on a killing spree, that really scares them. I have a little bit of all of these in The Violet Hour, so there’s something for everyone (LOL).

But if you’re not into horror, don’t despair! There’s also a little sci-fi, some romance, and a lot of international adventure – with a healthy dash of gore and thrill on the side J
