Description:
Modern day retelling of “Beauty and the Beast.”
For a thousand years, Chace has searched for a way to break the curse placed on him by a jilted lover. He’s a dragon shifter, one who can’t control when the magic will force him into a different form. He’s already lost everyone he ever cared about a few times over and doesn’t know how much longer he’s meant to suffer.
At his wit’s end, he makes a deal with a mysterious figure that offers him what he wants most – an end to his misery – in exchange for everything that’s his: His life, his power. His heart.
The next day, he meets Skylar, a modern day dragon slayer whose mission is to cage him – or kill him. Sexy, witty and brave, she is the yin to his yang, the woman destined to break the curse, balance his magic and make his broken heart whole.
Except it’s too late. Not only has he sealed his fate, but an innocent one-night-stand with Skylar has dragged her into the middle of a deal with the devil, one she won’t escape, if he can’t convince her that dragon shifters aren’t her enemies.
MB' INTERVIEW
You have written till now over seventeen books and five series! Congratulations! What do they have in common?
Tortured heroes and heroines, true love and the struggle between good and evil!
Your Goodreads description says that you write Young Adult and Adult Paranormal Romance. What are the most important differences between Young Adult and Adult and how do you adapt your writing to respect their requirements? Is this criteria a useful, correct or an artificial one, a marketing scheme (I have in view here also the New Adult)?
I’m speaking for what works for me on this one! After I released my first three Young Adult novels, I was told that there were a bunch of rules THAT CAN NEVER, EVER BE BROKEN! I knew none of them and therefore ignored them all and have never once regretted breaking all the genre rules.
For me, it’s all about the age of the heroine and where she is in life. In my Witchling Series, the girls range from sixteen and eighteen and are still in school, facing school-like challenges in addition to learning how to use their magic powers and make good choices for their futures.
For my Broken Beauty novellas, the heroine is seventeen, almost eighteen, when she’s brutally raped and all but abandoned by her family to deal with the aftermath. This one I classify as New Adult, because it’s got more mature issues than those of how she handles returning to high school. She’s struggling with complicated emotional issues while being thrust into the spotlight of her father’s re-election campaign.
For my adult romances, the heroines are facing more adult choices. They are juggling careers, love, responsibilities and their magic powers (where applicable!)
I saw that there is (almost) always confusion between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal (romance). As a Paranormal Romance writer, can you, please, tell us how to put a book in the right category?
Like my answer above, you’ll find that I am only aware of what works for me! I’ve seen a few different definitions, where Urban Fantasy has more of a city setting whereas in Paranormal Romance, the setting isn’t as critical. I’ve seen other explanations, too, that contradict this. I personally don’t go into writing a book thinking – I’m going to write UF this time. I don’t get hung up on subgenres. I just write great stories, because, at the end of the day, that’s the most important thing!
Charred Heart was published in November 2013 and the second book of the series, Charred Tears, was published in less than a month. Do you have all series ready? And what do you think about the big periods of time between volumes of a series?
I can write a full-length novel in about two weeks, when focused. But I rarely focus on one book at a time. I am constantly working on a few different series at once. For example, I’m working on about five projects, each of them in a different series, right now. This week, I’ll flip to exclusive focus on “Charred Hope,” the third Heart of Fire book, in order to have it ready to release in two to three weeks.
As for the time between volumes of a series … I think it just depends on the author’s comfort level in terms of how fast he/she writes and also what the Muses want them to write at the moment. I juggle multiple series, which means some get pushed back to long periods of times between volumes whereas some, like the Heart of Fire, are released monthly. For me, it’s about what story is talking to me. My writing is a gift, and I love and respect both the stories that I’m able to create and my ability to create them. The stories flow. If they’re not flowing, I work on something else until they do!
Sometimes that means larger gaps between releases and sometimes, it means quick turnarounds.
Why did you choose the dragon and what the dragon represents to you?
I chose the dragon, because one of my biggest fans and supporters, Lisa, asked me to write her a dragon shifter book! I’m a fan of mythical creatures in general, just because I love magic and have a crazy imagination.
