Description:
As president of Paranormal Addicts Anonymous, Stella’s got no time for popular guys. Especially the surfers who hang at Shoreline’s beach—they think flashing a sand-sprinkled, tanned chest is enough to get any girl. But when surfer-hunk Damien Capernalli crashes Stella’s PAA fieldtrip to a haunted bed and breakfast, it may be time to rethink her priorities.
...And what’s with that wolfish gleam in Damien's eye?
GUEST POST
How I got the idea for To Kiss a Werewolf
A story idea usually comes to me through a series of random images or fragmented scenes. For TO KISS A WEREWOLF, I had first visualized Stella, the main girl, peeking out from behind some rocks on a beach at night. She was watching her crush, Damien, who was shirtless with his buddies, holding their surf boards. I then thought about this girl writing a diary entry about the experience. Stella writes about how her crush actually had some chest hair, and she can hardly believe it. She didn’t think any of the guys at her high school were capable of growing more than two strands per pec. And then I thought, I wonder what she would think if she saw her crush, and all his surfer friends, morph from right before her very eyes into werewolves.
I wondered if I was off my rocker for wanting to write a story about a pack of surfing werewolves. I mean, I’ve written about a cat that switches bodies with girls, but for some reason the whole surfing-werewolves idea seemed totally absurd.
And then I knew I was onto something...
I seriously think the absurdity of the idea made me fall in love with TO KISS A WEREWOLF more. It’s what makes it captivating. It also allows for some fun comedy, which makes it that much more worth it.
Well, I started writing that initial scene--the one where Stella sees the surfers morph--but nixed it, because I realized she can’t know about Damien’s condition at first. He would no longer have mystery behind his eyes. The story would lose a lot of intrigue. And Damien, I realized, needed to be alone in his condition, so he would seek someone for help.
That someone would be none other than Stella Dabrowski…
That’s when I imagined Stella as a semi-goth chick who is President of Paranormal Addicts Anonymous. She hast to be attracted to the very-popular Damien Capernalli, all the while struggling with her feelings. Jocks are not supposed to be her thing.
And Damien… he’s having the same issue. He’s attracted to someone not from his clique. However, he starts to accept his feelings for her faster than she does for him. So now that he has a real reason to talk to her about his condition--his sudden werewolf condition--he leaps at the opportunity. And then the drama and comedy ensues.
Having these basic ideas, I had a strong enough foundation to move forward. It was so much fun, too. The story surprised me. I did NOT expect where it headed. I had NO idea the story would morph so much into what it became. There are a few twists and turns that should surprise the reader, since they totally took me, the writer, by surprise.
