Review Dearhart Clan series by Eri Nelson

REVIEW

It is not in my nature, but if I was more exuberant this review would be started with a WOW! But so, I will try to tell you what I liked.

The first volume presents mainly the formation of a couple and seems to be the typical Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy story. But it will earn a much greater value and importance since it is the one that provides the motivations, explanations and opens the path for the stories which are to come in the next books. That's because each volume will continue the story of the couple previously introduced and will bring others and these will intertwine and determine each other.

I really liked this romance part of the series! Why? Because since two years ago when I started reading PR / UF, I was attracted, but also intrigued by this imprinting and soul –mate thing, which at a hasty glance, it seems that appoints a great relationship instantly born, a made-up supreme love which the lucky new lovers seem to accept without problems and the most of the authors use it as such. But Eri Nelson satisfy my frustration by the fact that, even if she doesn’t questions the power of imprinting, although she presents different reactions of those involved: the immediate acceptance of the mutual love, the refusal (initially one or unsurpassed still) to be linked forever by the same person, insecurity, the regret for the loss of previous mate (!), the supreme sacrifice and the denial of your own clan, hope, confusion, anxiety, sexual excitement and the sense of accomplishment as an individual. The author will provide realism for this myth (by introducing some of a free will) and also will succeed to make you feel and think about the feelings of each couple / individual in Dearhart.

But romance stories, somehow independently of each another, are not everything. They merge into a broader framework, that of life and death. The characters have not only to fight the struggle of the "acceptance" of what they are or of their mate, but a more important battle, that of survival in a world where specialized government departments do what they know best. This fight which gradually becomes the focus of the series, threatening all werewolves either good or bad, is a tough one. The dangers and the means are well chosen by the author (for example, one of the characters made me think about Nazi Dr. Mengele). Found in the plot that became the main one, the sacrifice and betrayal, the hatred between species and between creator and created, the thirst for power and control, the pure evil make that the predictable happy ending to not sound so sure anymore. The hope remains in those ancient prophecies that were introduced imperceptibly.

The characters are different and they are treated seriously. Each of those involved comes with its own history and its own baggage of feelings that will tantalize them (including adaptation or not to the "offered" life) and influence their decisions. The author will alternatively present the points of view of each character, including the negative ones, bringing rhythm and freshness to the story and always keeping the reader alert and bound to the book.

In the end I'll tell you no more only that I liked Dearhart very much (more than I initially expected) and, even if each of us seek and want something different from the books that we read, I recommend to you this series.

  3. Thank you Daniela, the first cover was by an awesome artist by the name of Richard Roberts. You can find his work at www.theotherstream.com

The prior covers were by my hand. Albeit the second had help by my daughter, Katie Nelson, who is in college studying graphical designs and advertising.

I agree with you as to the outlet of stories that can be had from Werewolves. One of my favorites is Underworld.

  12. I also read the DHC and I loved it. First of all because it is about wolves, and then because it has that rare thing that made me to want more. I always thought that a book or a books series should be addictive. (@Eri, don't blush anymore, you know that I always say the truth, or at least about my boyfriends and books)
So, I can't wait to read the next two books of the series. They are on my "Must Read List"
