The Twisted Truth by Erin Armstrong

Description:

Michelle Marshall is a strong independent woman with a lot of baggage. Raped right before the start of her senior year of college, Michelle grows to be a caring, single mother to her daughter. Things begin to look pretty grim when the Charity House, the women's shelter she founded, is on the brink of having to close its doors. That is, until Tyler Austin, a mysterious and handsome stranger comes into the picture. Helping Michelle resuscitate the Charity House, Ty also helps her learn to trust, love and feel what she hasn't in years. Not everything is quite as perfect as Michelle would like though, as occasional hints lead her to believe something is not quite right. Her suspicions are confirmed when even more frightening developments occur and start to become...deadly.

Excerpt:

It wasn’t until midnight that Michelle gave up and made her way to her bedroom. Even though she knew he wouldn’t materialize, she left the door unlocked for him, as she always did when he was coming over. She laid down in her bed, leaned over, and touched the picture of Shawn. His brown skin was so radiant. His dark brown eyes stared back at her from the frame. All she could hope for was that maybe he just simply forgot they had a date tonight and he would eventually walk through the door, embarrassed and apologetic, but most of all, safe.

Michelle wasn’t sure how long she had been dozing, but she was startled to find that she had drifted off. She only woke up because the click of the front door had jarred her awake. She
tried to convince herself not to let Shawn off that easy. He had some serious explaining to do. Shawn had some nerve stepping up in her house so late. She heard footsteps moving around in the living room. He was obviously wearing work boots; the footsteps were too loud to be his sneakers, but something was…off. It took Michelle a few seconds to realize that she could hear not one, but two sets of footsteps. She sat up and looked around the room.

Where could she hide? The closet was packed with a school year’s worth of clothes and shoes, and there’s no way she’d fit under the bed. Her heart was pounding; she knew that whoever was in the apartment was not Shawn. She cursed herself for leaving the door unlocked.

The footsteps stopped right outside of her door. Slowly, the door creaked open. Before she could even muster up the courage to lift her head and look toward the door, she felt the weight of a
body on top of her. She could barely make out two figures clawing at her thick down comforter.

The one on top of her pulled it off her body, letting it fall to the floor. She felt herself being flipped over onto her back; as much as she fought, he was too strong for her. Her hands were pinned to each side of her pillow. Michelle once again strained to see, but the room was too dark. She came to the realization that she was fighting for her life, and she decided she would fight hard. She kicked her legs and tried to wiggle out from under the heavy body hovering over her.

Even though she couldn’t see, she knew that this unknown figure had to be a man. His strength was so overwhelming that it was hard to breathe.
