EXCERPT

The Angel of War, who I used to think of as a being you never wanted to meet, shakes his head and offers his hand, “Walk with me?”

My stomach flutters again as my hand slips into his. We walk in silence through the town. The sky roars louder, and I clench Camael’s hand tighter. I finally ask, “Why does the sky do that? Is that The Creator trying to communicate with them?”

Camael smiles wide, “It is thunder. Earth is a very different environment. The weather in Paradise is a constant. We do not know of anything but the warmth and Light of The Creator. Here, there is cold, hot, snow, wind, rain… Thunder is a sure precedence of rain.” He stops me, and we face each other before he takes my other hand. “It is a sensation to be experienced.”

A drop of water falls onto his cheek, and he closes his eyes. He tilts his head up as more water drips across his face from above. I start to feel it and mirror him. The water kisses my skin slow and gentle at first. Before long, it is as if we have been standing beneath a waterfall. I open my eyes and find Camael smiling at me slightly dazed. There’s a need for me to close the distance between us. Camael takes a step closer before I can, causing me to stutter, “Cam… I… I am feeling things I should not.”

He is so close, I have to look up as he whispers to me, “You are not alone.”

“We could not possibly be meant for each other.”

He agrees, “Our ranks are not aligned.”

“Maybe we should keep our distance from each other.”

He hesitates, his focus bouncing between my pleading gaze. “I cannot do that.”

For the first time in my existence, I experience something I never expected. The Angel of War’s lips touch mine. A surge of energy shoots through my body with no distinct origin. My wings burst from concealment, tearing the dress I was given. Camael pulls me closer. At this moment, I know I am meant to be with him, yet it is frowned upon because of our ranks. He is an Original Archangel. I am just an Archangel. My position in the hierarchy is nowhere near his ilk. I do not belong with him, but it feels so right.

That one kiss is all it takes. Camael and I are inseparable. For months, we search London for Leviathan, getting closer every day. Cam and I share secret glances, sneak out after dark, and I know we are doomed because… I love him.
